An experiment was conducted to see if people could accurately judge their own communication abilities.

사람들이 자신의 의사소통 능력을 정확히 판단할 수 있는지를 알아보기 위해 한 실험이 수행되었다.

Participants were divided into pairs.

참가자들은 짝을 지어 나뉘었다.

One person was designated the tapper, and the other was designated the listener.

한 사람은 두드리는 사람으로 지정되었고, 다른 한 사람은 듣는 사람으로 지정되었다.

The tappers were told to lightly hit the table to the rhythm of a well-known song, and the listeners had to guess what it was.

두드리는 사람들은 잘 알려진 노래의 리듬에 맞춰 책상을 가볍게 두드리라고 들었고, 듣는 사람들은 그것이 무엇인지 알아맞혀야 했다.

Before they began, the tappers had to predict how often the listeners would be able to guess correctly.

그들이 시작하기 전에, 두드리는 사람들은 듣는 사람들이 몇 번이나 정확하게 알아맞힐 수 있을지 예측해야 했다.

On average, they expected the listeners to guess about half the songs they tapped.

평균적으로, 그들은 자신들이 두드린 노래의 절반 정도를 듣는 사람들이 알아맞힐 것이라고 예상했다.

In reality, however, the listeners guessed only three out of 120 songs.

하지만, 실제로 듣는 사람들은 120곡 중에서 단 세 곡만 알아맞혔다.

This happened because the tappers could hear the songs in their heads, but the listeners could not.

이러한 일은 두드리는 사람들은 자신의 머릿속에서 그 노래들을 들을 수 있었지만, 듣는 사람들은 그럴 수 없었기 때문에 일어났다.

It shows that we find it difficult to put ourselves in the shoes of people who are unfamiliar with things we are familiar with.

이것은 우리가 우리에게는 익숙한 것들에 대해 익숙하지 않은 사람들의 입장에서 생각하는 것을 어려워 한다는 것을 보여준다.
