When a close family friend of Jack Andraka died of pancreatic cancer, the 15-year-old was extremely upset.
But instead of sitting around and feeling sorry for himself, he took action.
He did some research and found out that pancreatic cancer is unusually difficult to detect.
So he decided to develop a method that would allow doctors to diagnose pancreatic cancer sooner and give patients a better chance of surviving.
The reason this type of cancer is so hard to detect is that the pancreas is located deep inside the body.
Therefore, tumors often remain hidden until they are quite large.
By the time doctors know that they are there, it is often too late to save the patient.
However, these tumors do cause an increase in mesothelin, a protein that is found in the blood.
Unfortunately, Jack soon learned that there was no simple, inexpensive way for doctors to test a person’s mesothelin levels.
So he came up with an idea for paper strips that can be used to measure mesothelin in the blood and alert doctors to increases before the cancer becomes too advanced.
He realized that blood could be tested with a special kind of paper with microscopic tubes that react to the presence of mesothelin.
Not only would this method be faster and cheaper than the existing methods, it would also be more effective.
However, to transform his idea into an actual invention, he still had to find someone who would give him access to the medical equipment he needed.
His request was turned down by 199 medical professionals before a scientist working at Johns Hopkins University decided to give Jack a chance.
He gave him space in his laboratory to work on his project, and Jack eventually completed it and even won first prize with it at an international science fair for kids.
Jack now hopes that doctors will be able to use his test strips soon.
