People often use language not just to share information but to shape how others perceive things.
Imagine a manager saying, “mistakes were made” after a project fails, rather than “I made a mistake.”
The difference is more than just phrasing.
When such an expression is used, the subject of the action disappears, which shifts attention away from who did it.
This kind of expression is called distancing language.
It is a pattern in which speakers use expressions like “it was done,” “someone took it,” or “things happened” to distance themselves from what they did.
This pattern appears frequently in public statements and everyday conversations alike.
While it may seem like a small language choice, the effect can be significant.
Listeners are left with less clarity about who is at fault for an action, which ultimately manipulates their perception of blame.
