Many people believe that a stronger and harder car body makes driving safer overall.

많은 사람들은 더 강하고 단단한 차체가 전반적으로 운전을 더 안전하게 만든다고 믿는다.

However, modern car safety follows a different design.

그러나 현대의 자동차 안전은 다른 설계를 따른다.

Instead of making everything solid, engineers design cars with areas called crumple zones, which are in the front and back of a vehicle.

모든 것을 단단하게 만드는 대신, 엔지니어들은 차량의 앞과 뒤에 있는 크럼플 존이라는 구역을 두어 자동차를 설계한다.

Crumple zones are designed to reduce the impact of a crash by allowing the car body to bend.

크럼플 존은 차체가 구부러지도록 허용함으로써 충돌의 충격을 줄이도록 설계되어 있다.

During a crash, these areas press inward and absorb part of the force from the impact.

충돌 중, 이 부분들은 안쪽으로 눌리며 충격으로부터 나오는 힘의 일부를 흡수한다.

And the way they bend is not random.

They are designed to collapse in a controlled way during a collision.

As a result, much of the impact is absorbed before it reaches the passengers inside the car.

This concept can be explained with a simple principle from physics: the force of an impact depends on how quickly a moving object comes to a stop.

The faster it stops, the greater the force of the impact is.
