We often think that the older something is, the closer it is to being unusable.
A car, for example, gradually wears down until its parts can no longer function.
However, this expectation does not apply to ideas.
While physical objects wear out with use, ideas tend to follow the opposite pattern.
The longer an idea has survived, the more likely it is to continue existing in the future.
This happens because time works as a natural filter.
It eliminates ideas that fail to meet real human needs and keeps those that prove their value.
The basic rules of geometry, for example, have been with us for over 2,300 years.
While countless competing mathematical ideas have come and gone since then, these rules remain central to our understanding of shapes and space.
This doesn’t mean that there isn’t any room left for new ideas.
But only time can tell which new ideas will be able to truly maintain their worth in the future.
In contrast to physical objects, ideas that have survived longer are more likely to endure, as time removes those that lack value.
