Thomas Panek is blind, but he has run more than 20 marathons.

Panek completed the races with the help of his guide dog, but he wanted to find a way to run marathons on his own.

He asked one tech company if they could help him, and they responded by developing an AI smartphone app.

The app uses the phone’s camera to identify painted markers on the racetrack.

This allows it to calculate location and orientation so that it can guide the runner in the proper direction with audio cues.

Panek participated in the testing of the app.

He started walking on an indoor course before switching to running on a longer outdoor course.

The researchers that created the app believe it can be used for more than running races.

They hope it can help blind people get around on their own in their daily lives.
