What would happen if people stopped trusting the safety alerts designed to protect them?
At a university dormitory in the United States, students had heard so many false fire alarms that when a real fire broke out one night, many simply ignored the alarm.
This case shows that when alert systems send out numerous unreliable alerts, people lose trust in them.
And frequency is not the only issue, as alerts that fail to clearly specify the kind of threat or the actions required are just as likely to be ignored.
With each unreliable warning, the public’s trust in the system weakens.
For alert systems to be effective when the public needs them most, authorities must carefully manage the frequency and clarity of the warnings.
