When I was a young teacher, I had an unusual experience.

내가 젊은 교사였을 때, 나는 흔치 않은 경험을 했다.

I was teaching at a community college where most of the students were in their late teens or early 20s.

나는 대부분의 학생들이 10대 후반이나 20대 초반인 지역 대학에서 (학생들을) 가르치고 있었다.

One day, the dean came into my classroom, followed by an older man wearing an expensive suit.

어느 날, 학과장이 내 강의실에 왔는데, 비싼 정장을 입은 나이 든 남자 한 명이 따라왔다.

Because of the respectful way the dean was treating him, I assumed the man was an important visitor.

그를 대하는 학과장의 공손한 태도 때문에, 나는 그 남자가 중요한 손님이라고 추측했다.

However, this wasn’t the case.

그러나, 그게 아니었다.

The dean explained that the man, who he introduced as Mr. Kane, would be attending my class.

I was only 27 at the time, so I was a bit uncomfortable with having someone nearly twice my age in my class.

나는 그 당시에 겨우 27살이어서, 거의 내 나이의 두 배인 누군가가 내 수업을 듣는 것이 조금 불편했다.

I asked him to take a seat at an empty desk at the front of the room, but instead he walked straight to the back.

Then he asked another student to move so that he could sit next to Lucy, the most beautiful woman in the class.

Although I was afraid he was acting inappropriately, Lucy didn’t seem to mind.

Mr. Kane continued to attend my class for several weeks.

I continued to be uncomfortable in his presence, wondering who this mystery man was.

Finally, as the end of the semester was approaching, I invited all of my students to have dinner together.

I expected Mr. Kane to politely decline, but, much to my surprise, he agreed to come along.

Once we were outside of the classroom together, Mr. Kane’s personality changed completely.

He was a manager at a local bank who had accepted a promotion.

However, as a young man, he had left school before graduating.

So he had to take my class in order to get the degree required for the promotion.

We also learned something even more surprising.

Lucy was actually his daughter!

I still regret not getting to know Mr. Kane sooner.

He was an interesting man.
