A study of more than 34,000 workers has shown that having a long commute can lead to poor health and low productivity in the workplace.
According to the study, people with a daily commute of less than 30 minutes have seven more days of productive work time per year than people with a commute of 60 minutes or more.
What’s more, workers with long commutes were shown to be 33% more at risk of experiencing depression.
According to the researchers, the best way for companies to deal with this problem is by offering their employees flexible work hours.
They say that workers who have the ability to adjust their schedule are more productive and less likely to become depressed.
Interestingly, the study showed that these benefits are not enjoyed by workers who have the option to work from home but are not given flexible hours.
This suggests that control over one’s schedule matters more than where one works.
