Refugees are people who are forced to leave their homes, usually due to war.
But these days, there is a new kind of refugee—environmental refugees.
In Eastern Africa, for example, a man named Ahmed spent most of his life herding animals.
Unfortunately, 90% of his animals died due to a terrible drought.
This forced him to move to a nearby village, where he struggles to survive.
It is estimated that more than 700,000 people have become environmental refugees due to this drought alone.
Even worse, scientists believe that by the year 2050, between 50 and 200 million people around the world will lose their homes due to climate change.
Sadly, environmental refugees are not protected by the same laws as other refugees.
Instead, they are simply considered immigrants.
These laws must be changed to include environmental refugees so that they can receive the help they desperately need.
