Neil Harbisson is a British artist and composer who was raised in the Catalonia region of Spain.

Neil Harbisson(닐 하비슨)은 스페인의 카탈루냐 지역에서 자란 영국인 화가이자 작곡가이다.

He was born with an unusual condition that allows him to only see black, white, and various shades of gray.

그는 검은색, 흰색, 그리고 여러 가지 회색 색조들만 볼 수 있는 희귀병을 가지고 태어났다.

As a child, his doctors informed him that there was no cure.

어렸을 때 의사들은 그에게 치료법이 없다고 알려 주었다.

Despite this, at the age of 16, he decided to study art, in the hopes of understanding colors better.

While in university, he attended a lecture on cybernetics.

Afterward, he approached the speaker and asked about the possibility of creating a device that would allow him to see colors.

Eventually, using a webcam, a computer, and headphones, the speaker created a device that could translate colors into different sounds.

Nicknamed the “eyeborg,” the device is worn on the head, with a small camera hanging above one eye.

The camera detects light waves, which are changed into sound by a chip in the rear of the device.

Harbisson can hear the sounds through the bone of his skull.

Despite these problems, he is very happy with the device and expects it to continue to evolve.
