In motor racing, the design of a car is closely connected to the way air moves around it.
One important idea is downforce, the force that pushes the car toward the ground when it moves fast.
This force comes from the way air moves around the car.
Engineers shape the body so that the air underneath moves faster than the air on top.
This makes the air pressure below the car lower than the pressure above, and the higher pressure on top presses the car down toward the road.
This extra force holds the tires to the road surface.
As a result of increased contact, the car can turn corners more quickly without losing control.
To create stronger downforce, race cars sit very low to the ground.
This leaves little space for the air under the car, which makes the downward force even greater.
