David Owen, a New York father, wanted to teach his son Leo the value of money.
He opened a home bank called the “First National Bank of Dad.”
At first, Leo remained doubtful.
Holding a candy bar, he said, “Why should I wait a month for a few cents?
I want this chocolate now!”
David laughed and replied, “Just wait, son.
In this bank, money grows like a magic plant.
If you eat the seeds now, the magic stops.”
To demonstrate this, David offered a high interest rate of 5% a month.
As a result, Leo’s money grew quickly.
One day, he shouted, “Dad, is the bank broken?
There is more money here, but I didn’t add any!”
David smiled and said, “That is your money working for you while you sleep.”
Motivated, Leo stopped spending and started saving every single penny.
He even looked for additional chores around the house to earn more money to deposit.
Eventually, David decided it was time to introduce a more complicated concept of economics, so he announced, “The bank is lowering the rate to 3%.”
Leo was disappointed.
Leo
To balance the lower rate, David opened the “Dad Stock Exchange.”
He explained, “Just saving is not always enough.
To grow your wealth, you must learn to invest in the world.”
David let him buy shares of real companies.
David
Leo was excited to be a shareholder in his favorite toy company.
At dinner, he even asked, “How are our companies doing today, Dad?”
In this way, Leo developed a strong sense of financial responsibility.
One day, he chose to invest his money instead of buying a new game.
“I’ll pass,” he said.
“The future version of me will be much richer.”
Watching this, David felt proud that his son was now ready to navigate the real economic world with confidence.
