When it comes to human survival, the goods critical to life, such as bread, are much more valuable than diamonds, which have no influence on human existence.
In reality, however, bread is much cheaper than diamonds.
Why is this?
In the 19th century, economists attempted to explain this paradox of value with the idea of marginal utility.
Marginal utility refers to how much satisfaction can be attained by the possession of additional units of a product.
Diamonds are scarce, and many people want them.
Therefore, people get great satisfaction by acquiring more diamonds, which means that their marginal utility is high.
This is the reason people are willing to pay high prices for them.
Bread, however, is quite different.
As soon as people become full, its benefits greatly decrease.
So the marginal utility of bread is low, as is its price.
