Governments and public institutions often try to guide citizens toward better decisions while still keeping their freedom of choice.
One method used in public policy is called a “nudge,” which gently influences behavior without removing any options or greatly changing financial rewards.
Instead of forcing people to act in a particular way, a nudge changes the environment in which decisions are made so that certain preferred choices become more obvious.
For example, fruit may be placed at eye level in a school cafeteria while unhealthy food is placed on a lower shelf.
Because the fruit is easier to see, many people choose it without thinking very much.
This small change promotes healthier diets without banning unhealthy food.
Nudges are effective because the average person will choose the easiest path when making decisions.
When the best choice is also made the easiest one—like when recycling bins are placed next to trash cans in public places—participation becomes much higher.
