Almost everyone nowadays would say that grass is green and the sky is blue.
오늘날 대부분의 사람은 잔디는 초록색이고, 하늘은 파란색이라고 말할 것이다.
However, this wasn't always the case.
그러나 항상 그렇지만은 않았다.
Long ago, some people might have said that the sky was also green!
오래전, 몇몇 사람들은 하늘 또한 초록색이라고 말했을지도 모른다!
This is because many ancient languages, including Hebrew and Sanskrit, didn't have a word for the color blue.
이것은 히브리어와 산스크리트어를 포함한 많은 고대 언어에 파란색을 가리키는 단어가 없었기 때문이다.
Instead, the people who spoke those languages usually associated blue with other colors, such as green.
대신에, 그 언어를 사용하던 사람들은 주로 파란색을 초록색과 같은 다른 색과 관련지었다.
In fact, one of the only cultures that did identify blue as a unique color was that of ancient Egypt, and this may have been due to the fact that the Egyptians had figured out a way to create blue dye.
실제로, 파란색을 고유한 색으로 인식했던 유일한 문화권들 중 하나는 고대 이집트였는데, 이는 이집트인들이 파란색 염료를 만드는 방법을 알아냈다는 사실 때문일지도 모른다.
Evidence of how color words influence the way people see the world can also be found in the writings of ancient cultures.
색상 언어가 사람들이 세상을 보는 방식에 어떻게 영향을 주는지에 대한 근거는 고대 문화의 글에서도 발견될 수 있다.
The work of the Greek poet Homer provides a fascinating example of this.
그리스의 시인 호메로스의 작품은 이에 대한 매력적인 예시를 제공한다.
In his epic poem The Odyssey, Homer described the sea as being "wine-dark" rather than comparing it to something blue.
그의 서사시 '오디세이'에서, 호메로스는 바다를 파란 물체와 비교하는 대신 '어두운 와인색'이라고 묘사했다.
He also described honey as being green and sheep as being violet!
그는 꿀을 초록색으로, 양을 보라색으로 묘사하기도 했다!
