Obviously, Homer perceived things differently than we do today.
확실히, 호메로스는 오늘날 우리가 인식하는 것과 다르게 사물을 인식했다.
This is partly because his language, ancient Greek, categorized colors differently.
그의 언어인 고대 그리스어가 색을 다르게 분류했던 것이 그 이유의 일부이다.
It identified colors based on how dark or light they were.
그 언어는 색을 그것이 얼마나 어둡고 밝은지에 따라 분류했다.
For instance, the Greek word kyaneos referred to dark colors such as violet, dark blue, and black.
예를 들어, 그리스어 단어인 kyaneos는 보라색, 짙은 파란색, 검은색과 같은 어두운 색을 가리켰다.
On the other hand, the word glaukos was used for light colors such as gray, light blue, and yellow.
반면, glaukos라는 단어는 회색, 하늘색, 노란색과 같은 밝은 색에 쓰였다.
So, although ancient Greek people could see all of the same colors that we do, they didn't have a separate word for each one.
따라서 고대 그리스인들이 우리가 보는 것과 같은 모든 색을 볼 수 있었다 하더라도, 그들에게는 각 색을 구분하는 별도의 단어가 없었다.
Even today, there are many languages that don't have separate words for each color.
심지어 오늘날에도, 각각의 색깔에 대한 별도의 단어가 없는 언어가 많다.
For example, the Himba tribe of Namibia uses a language that names only five colors.
예를 들어, 나미비아의 힘바족은 다섯 가지의 색에만 이름을 붙이는 언어를 사용한다.
Interestingly, two of them describe different shades of green!
흥미롭게도, 그중 둘은 서로 다른 초록 빛을 묘사한다!
Yet none of its words describe the color blue.
그렇지만 그들의 단어 중 어떤 것도 파란색을 묘사하지는 않는다.
For researcher Jules Davidoff, this raised an interesting question:
이는 연구원인 줄스 다비도프에게 흥미로운 의문점을 제시했다.
If they don't have a word for it, can they really see it?
그들에게 파란색에 대한 단어가 없다면, 그들이 그것(파란색)을 실제로 볼 수 있을까?
He decided to conduct an experiment to find out.
그는 이를 알아내기 위해 실험을 하기로 했다.
