After Amy lost her mom, she moved to the countryside and lived with her dad, an inventor.
One day, Amy found 16 wild goose eggs in the forest.
The mother goose didn’t return, so Amy decided to take the eggs home and raise the geese.
When the baby geese finally broke through their shells, Amy saw that one of them had a weak leg.
She named him Igor.
She hoped he would grow stronger.
The geese thought Amy was their mom, so they followed her around all the time.
Because they grew very fast, it was hard to raise them.
Amy’s dad asked Officer Seifert, an animal control officer, for advice.
A few days later, he came to their house.
(Officer Seifert) If you want to keep the geese in your home, you have to cut their wings a little to make sure they can’t fly.
It’s the law.
The officer picked up a baby goose.
Take the wing and cut it like this ...
(Amy) Stop it!
(Amy)
Amy got mad at her dad for calling the officer.
Amy
Amy’s dad didn’t expect the officer to act like that.
He just wanted to help her.
(Dad) I’m so sorry, Amy.
Amy.
(Dad) I have an idea that may solve the problem.
Do you want to hear it?
(Amy) Okay.
(Amy)
(Dad) Have you heard that geese fly south every winter?
They move to a warm place and then come back in the spring.
(Amy) I didn’t know that.
(Amy)
(Dad) If the geese learn how to fly, they can visit us every year.
So, I think it’s time to teach them.
And I’m sure you can do it.
(Amy) Me? How?
(Amy)
(Dad) I’ll teach you how to fly a plane that I’m designing.
If you fly in it, the geese will follow you!
Amy knew that her dad was right.
Amy
She had to learn how to fly the plane.
Then, she could save the geese.
Amy’s dad made a special plane just for her, and she quickly learned to fly it.
Soon, Amy was ready to fly in front of the geese.
Surprisingly, when the geese saw the plane taking off, they started flying one by one.
But one goose was still on the ground. It was Igor.
Igor moved his wings and cried out.
Igor
Igor couldn’t run fast enough because of his weak leg.
But Amy was sure that Igor could fly!
She spoke over the radio in a loud voice.
(Amy) Igor! You can do it! Come on!
(Amy) Igor!
Igor’s eyes became wide when he heard Amy’s voice.
He started to run and moved his wings up and down.
Finally, he started to fly!
He flew very low at first, but soon he rose as high as the other geese.
At last, all the geese were flying with Amy.
It was an amazing moment!
