중2 NE능률 영어교과서 본문(김기택, 2022) Lesson 5

Art class was over, but Vashti still sat in her chair.

미술 수업이 끝났지만, Vashti는 여전히 의자에 앉아 있었다.

Her paper was blank.

그녀의 종이는 비어 있었다.

Her teacher leaned over and looked at it.

그녀의 선생님은 몸을 숙여 그것을 보았다.

“Ah! It is a polar bear in a snowstorm,” she said.

“아! 그것은 눈보라 속의 북극곰이구나.”라고 그녀가 말했다.

“That’s funny!” said Vashti.

“그거 재미있네요!”라고 Vashti가 말했다.

“I CAN’T draw!”

“저는 그림을 못 그려요!”

Her teacher smiled.

그녀의 선생님이 미소 지었다.

“Just make a mark.”

“그냥 표시를 해보렴.”

Vashti picked up a marker and drew a small dot on the paper.

Vashti는 매직펜을 들어 종이 위에 작은 점을 그렸다.

“Here it is!”

“여기 있어요!”

Her teacher picked up the paper and looked at it carefully.

그녀의 선생님은 종이를 들어 그것을 자세히 살펴보았다.

“Hmmmm.”

“흠.”

She pushed the paper toward Vashti and asked her to sign it.

그녀는 종이를 Vashti를 향해 내밀고 그녀에게 그것에 서명을 해달라고 요청했다.

Vashti thought for a moment.

Vashti는 잠시 동안 생각했다.

“Well, maybe I can’t draw, but I CAN sign my name.”

“음, 어쩌면 저는 그림은 못 그리지만, 제 이름을 서명할 수는 있어요.”

The next day, Vashti was surprised to see something in a frame on the wall of the art classroom.

다음 날, Vashti는 미술실 벽에 있는 액자에서 무언가를 보고 놀랐다.

It was her little dot!

그것은 그녀의 작은 점이었다!

“I can make a better dot than that!”

“나는 저것보다 더 나은 점을 만들 수 있어!”

Vashti said.

Vashti가 말했다.

She got a brush and started painting.

그녀는 붓을 들고 그리기 시작했다.

A red dot.

빨간색 점.

A purple dot.

자주색 점.

A yellow dot.

노란색 점.

A blue dot.

파란색 점.

Then she mixed blue and yellow together.

그러고 나서 그녀는 파란색과 노란색을 함께 섞었다.

She discovered that she could make a green dot.

그녀는 초록색 점을 만들 수 있다는 것을 발견했다.

Vashti kept experimenting.

Vashti는 계속해서 실험했다.

She painted lots of little dots in many colors.

그녀는 여러 색의 많은 작은 점들을 그렸다.

“If I can make little dots, I can make big dots, too.”

“내가 작은 점들을 만들 수 있다면, 큰 점도 만들 수 있을 거야.”

All of the dots that she painted looked beautiful together on the paper.

그녀가 그린 모든 점이 종이 위에서 함께 아름답게 보였다.

At the school art show a few weeks later, everyone loved Vashti’s paintings.

몇 주 후 학교 미술 전시회에서, 모든 사람이 Vashti의 그림들을 매우 좋아했다.

A little boy looked up at her.

한 어린 소년이 그녀를 올려다보았다.

“You’re a really great artist.

“당신은 정말 훌륭한 화가예요.

I want to paint like you,” he said.

저는 당신처럼 그리고 싶어요.”라고 그가 말했다.

“I bet you can,” said Vashti.

“너는 틀림없이 할 수 있어.”라고 Vashti가 말했다.

“Me? No, not me. I CAN’T draw!”

“저요? 아니, 저는 아니에요. 저는 그림을 못 그려요!”

Vashti smiled.

Vashti가 미소를 지었다.

She handed the boy a blank sheet of paper and told him to draw a line.

그녀는 소년에게 빈 종이 한 장을 건네고 그에게 선을 그리라고 말했다.

The pencil which the boy held shook as he drew.

소년이 그릴 때 그가 잡은 연필이 흔들렸다.

Vashti looked at the boy’s line.

Vashti는 소년의 선을 바라봤다.

And then she said ...

그리고 그때 그녀가 말했다 ...

“Sign it.”

“서명해 봐.”
