Did you just finish a bag of chips?
Most people throw the empty bag away.
However, at a nonprofit organization in the U.S., empty chip bags are being transformed into sleeping bags.
Eradajere Oleita from Nigeria came up with this project.
She found a video in which someone used empty chip bags to make a sleeping bag.
At first, she decided to make the bags for the homeless by herself, but after a while she recruited volunteers to help her.
To make the sleeping bags, the chip bags are soaked in hot, soapy water.
Next, they are cut open and ironed together.
Finally, padding from old jackets is put inside the sleeping bags to make them warmer.
After the whole process is completed, the volunteers go into the streets and give out the bags to homeless people.
The project is a great example of “two birds with one stone.”
Homeless people can stay warm while the amount of garbage being thrown away is reduced.
For people who have difficulty walking, visiting a beach can be tough.
Thankfully, Greece has developed a new way for disabled people to access the sea—Seatrac.
Seatrac looks like a chair attached to a long track that stretches into the water.
It carries the user into the sea safely and smoothly.
The system is ideal for people who have trouble walking, including pregnant women and the elderly.
The chair is managed by remote control.
Users can use the remote control to operate the chair and move it along the track.
The system is powered entirely by solar energy.
It does not need any other form of power.
People can use the Seatrac service for free in Greece.
The system has been mainly funded by the Greek government and the EU.
The hope is that everyone can access Greece’s beautiful beaches without any difficulties.
Imagine your teacher gives you homework about vegetarianism.
You could research the topic on the Internet or visit a library to find information.
But there’s a better way.
Why not talk directly to a vegetarian at a human library?
Human libraries, sometimes referred to as “living libraries,” give people the chance to learn about topics from living experts.
Each expert is called a “human book.”
People who visit human libraries to learn are called “readers.”
Readers can “borrow” human books and have conversations with them.
The purpose of human libraries is to help people learn from one another through direct communication.
Human books can share their real life experiences with their own voices, and readers can ask any specific questions they have.
Also, human libraries encourage understanding between people who would not normally meet.
It is hoped that this will reduce problems caused by prejudice and stereotypes.
What kind of book would you like to borrow from a human library?
When you walk around the streets of Denmark, you may notice strollers outside.
The babies inside them are sleeping in front of shops even when the weather is cold!
In Denmark, people frequently leave napping infants outdoors.
They believe it helps babies to get used to cold weather, which is essential in northern countries.
They also think that breathing fresh outdoor air can strengthen the babies’ immune systems, reducing illness and supporting healthy lungs.
However, there may be another reason for this.
People in Denmark tend to use large strollers.
They do not fit easily in buildings that were constructed 80 to 100 years ago.
So, maybe the practice is just to avoid the difficulty of bringing strollers indoors.
The babies may look unsafe, but don’t worry!
Some parents use a thermometer to make sure it’s not too cold in the stroller.
Others use a monitor to keep constant watch over the baby.
