When did people start drinking wine?

언제부터 사람들이 포도주를 마시기 시작했을까?

Some people say it goes back to ancient times.

어떤 사람들은 그것이 고대로 거슬러 올라간다고 말한다.

A Persian king really liked grapes.

한 페르시아 왕은 포도를 매우 좋아했다.

So he had his servants harvest grapes and store them in a basement.

그래서 그는 그의 하인들에게 포도를 수확하도록 그리고 그것들을 지하실에 저장하도록 시켰다.

However, the grapes broke down into an alcoholic liquid, and the smell came up from the basement.

그런데 그 포도들은 알코올성의 액체로 분해되었다 그리고 지하실에서 냄새가 올라왔다.

People didn’t know about the process that turns fruit into alcohol.

사람들은 과일이 알코올로 변하는 과정에 대해 알지 못했다.

So they believed evil spirits in the basement were trying to poison the king.

그래서 그들은 지하실에 있는 악한 영혼들이 왕을 독살하려 한다고 믿었다.

Finally, the servants closed off the basement.

마침내 하인들은 지하실을 폐쇄해 버렸다.

Around that time, the Persian queen had a chronic headache.

그즈음에 페르시아 여왕은 만성적인 두통이 있었다.

She couldn’t stand the pain and decided to take the “poison” in the basement to kill herself.

그녀는 고통을 참을 수 없었다 그리고 목숨을 끊기 위해 지하실에 있는 ‘독’을 먹기로 결심했다.

However, after eating the grapes, she didn’t die.

그러나 그 포도를 먹은 후에, 그녀는 죽지 않았다.

Instead, she regained her energy and felt happy.

그 대신에 그녀는 힘을 되찾았다 그리고 기분이 좋아졌다.

The queen concluded that what she ate was a good thing and spread the news.

왕비는 그녀가 먹은 것이 좋은 것이라는 결론을 내렸다 그리고 그 소식을 퍼트렸다.

“Why can’t I move forward even though I’m running?” Alice asked.

“전 달리고 있는데도 왜 앞으로 나아갈 수 없는 걸까요?” Alice(앨리스)가 물었다.

“To move forward, you have to run twice as fast as you are now,” the Red Queen answered.

“앞으로 나아가기 위해서는 너는 지금보다 두 배 더 빨리 달려야 해” 붉은 여왕이 대답했다.

In fact, the world and Alice were moving at the same speed.

사실, 세상과 Alice는 같은 속도로 움직이고 있었다.

Our world is similar to Alice’s world of Wonderland.

우리의 세상은 Alice의 ‘이상한 나라’의 세상과 비슷하다.

Thinking this, American biologist Leigh Van Valen suggested an idea called the Red Queen effect.

이렇게 생각하여 미국의 생물학자 Leigh Van Valen(리반 베일런)은 붉은 여왕 효과라고 불리는 개념을 제시했다.

His idea states that animal and plant species must constantly evolve to survive.

그의 개념은 동식물 종은 살아남기 위해 끊임없이 진화해야 한다는 것이다.

This is because they compete with each other.

이는 그들이 서로 경쟁하기 때문이다.

So, when one species adapts to the environment, other ones also must adapt in response.

따라서 한 종이 환경에 적응하면 다른 종도 대응하여 적응해야 한다.

If a species fails to do this, it will disappear.

만약 한 종이 이렇게 하는 데 실패하면 그 종은 사라질 것이다.

For example, dodos had no predators, so they didn’t need to develop strong wings to fly.

예를 들어, 도도새는 포식자가 없었다 그래서 그들은 날 수 있는 튼튼한 날개를 발달시킬 필요가 없었다.

Thus, when humans discovered them, they were easy to hunt.

따라서 인간이 그들을 발견했을 때, 그들은 사냥하기에 쉬웠다.

On the other hand, antelopes changed in order to survive against speedy cheetahs.

반면에, 영양은 빠른 치타에 맞서 살아남기 위해 변화했다.

They learned to run extremely fast and to quickly change their direction.

그들은 매우 빠르게 달리는 것을 그리고 재빠르게 방향을 전환하는 것을 배웠다.

So, they are still alive today!
