Can you imagine a building that dances?

춤추는 빌딩을 상상할 수 있는가?

It sounds strange, but there is a building called the Dancing House in Prague.

이상하게 들리지만 프라하에는 ‘the Dancing House(춤추는 집)’라고 불리는 건물이 있다.

It was designed by architects Vlado Milunic and Frank Gehry and completed in 1996.

이것은 건축가인 Vlado Milunic(블라도 밀루니치)와 Frank Gehry(프랭크 게리)에 의해 설계되었다 그리고 1996년에 완공되었다.

The building’s unusual shape resembles a woman in a skirt and a man dancing together.

이 건물의 특이한 모양은 치마를 입은 여성과 남성이 함께 춤추는 모습을 닮았다.

In fact, the building was first named Ginger and Fred, after two famous dancers.

사실, 그 건물은 처음에 두 유명한 댄서의 이름을 따서 Ginger and Fred라고 이름 붙었다.

The glass side represents Ginger Rogers, and the rock one represents Fred Astaire.

유리로 된 쪽은 Ginger Rogers(진저 로저스)를 그리고 돌로 된 쪽은 Fred Astaire(프레드 아스테어)를 나타낸다.

Over the years, the Dancing House has become a Prague landmark.

세월이 흐르면서 the Dancing House는 프라하의 명소가 되었다.

Its shape is even featured on a Czech coin!

그것의 외형은 심지어 체코 동전에 특별히 포함되어 있다!

Look at these two maps.

이 두 지도를 보아라.

The first one probably looks familiar, but the second one might look strange.

Most schools and organizations around the world use the first one.

전 세계 대부분의 학교와 기관들이 첫 번째 지도를 사용한다.

However, public schools in Boston now use the second one.

그러나 보스턴의 공립 학교들은 이제 두 번째 지도를 사용한다.

Why did they make the change?

그들은 왜 바꿨을까?

Actually, neither map is completely accurate.

사실 둘 중 어느 지도도 완전히 정확하지 않다.

On the first map, the shape of the continents is correct.

첫 번째 지도에서, 대륙들의 모양은 정확하다.

But their size is not —Europe is larger and the other continents are smaller.

그러나 대륙들의 크기는 그렇지 않은데 유럽은 더 크고 다른 대륙들은 더 작다.

What’s more, Europe is in the center of the map.

게다가, 유럽이 지도의 중앙에 있다.

That’s because the map was created nearly 500 years ago, and Europe was very powerful at that time.

이는 그 지도가 거의 500년 전에 만들어졌고 그 당시 유럽은 아주 강력했기 때문이다.

The second map, however, was made in the late 1800s.

그러나 두 번째 지도는 1800년대 후반에 만들어졌다.

Although the shape of the continents is inaccurate, their size is correct.

비록 대륙들의 모양이 정확하지 않지만, 그 크기는 정확하다.

And Europe is no longer in the center.

그리고 유럽이 더 이상 중앙에 있지 않다.

Teachers at Boston public schools believe this map offers their students a new view of the world.

보스턴의 공립 학교 교사들은 이 지도가 그들의 학생들에게 세계에 대한 새로운 시각을 제공한다고 믿는다.
