“I’m sorry, but we were here first,” she says.

“미안하지만 우리가 먼저 왔어요.” 그녀가 말한다.

And then her daughter steps forward ― a girl I recognize from soccer ― Hali Hartling.

그러자 그녀의 딸이 앞으로 나오는데, 축구팀에서 알고 있는 Hali Hartling이다.

As her mother pulls their cart away, Hali leans closer to me.

엄마가 카트를 끌고 가자 Hali가 내게 몸을 기울인다.

“I’m sorry about that, Alyssa.”

“미안해, Alyssa.”

“Didn’t I share my water with you at the practice last week?” I point out to her.

“지난주 연습할 때 내가 물 나눠주지 않았니?” 나는 그녀에게 지적한다.

“Maybe you could return the favor and share a few bottles with me.”

“너도 호의를 베풀어서 나랑 물 몇 병 나눠도 되겠네.”

She looks back to her mother, who’s already moving down the aisle, then turns back to me shaking her head.

그녀는 이미 통로를 따라 이동하고 있는 어머니를 돌아보더니 고개를 절레절레 흔들며 내게로 돌아선다.

And then she gets a little bit red in the face, and turns to leave before it becomes a deep flush.

그러고는 얼굴이 약간 붉어지더니 더 붉어지기 전에 자리를 뜨려고 돌아선다.

I look for Garrett, whom I find in the frozen aisle.

나는 냉동식품 통로에서 Garrett을 발견한다.

Then I see something.

그러다 뭔가를 발견한다.

Just past the frozen vegetables and ice cream, there is a case packed with ice.

냉동 야채와 아이스크림 바로 옆에 얼음이 가득 담긴 상자가 있다.

I open the door and reach for a bag.

나는 문을 열고 얼음 봉지를 잡는다.

“What are you doing? We need water, not ice,” he reminds me.

“뭐 하는 거야? 우린 얼음이 아니라 물이 필요해.” 동생이 내게 상기시켜 준다.

“Ice is water. Just help me,” I tell him.

“얼음은 물이야. 돕기나 해.” 내가 말한다.

Garrett and I put one bag of ice after another into our cart, until it is piled as high as it can get.

Garrett과 나는 최대한 높이 쌓일 때까지 얼음 봉지를 카트에 담는다.

By now other people have taken notice and begin to empty the ice case.

이제 다른 사람들도 눈치를 채고 얼음 상자를 비우기 시작한다.

The cart is ridiculously heavy now, and almost impossible to push.

이제 카트는 엄청나게 무거워져서 밀기가 거의 불가능할 정도이다.

Then, a man in a business suit comes up behind us.

그때 정장 차림의 한 남자가 우리 뒤에서 나타난다.

He smiles. “Looks like you could use some help.”

그는 미소를 짓는다. “도움이 필요한 것 같구나.”

He doesn’t wait for us to answer before grabbing the cart’s handle.

그는 우리가 대답할 때까지 기다리지 않고 카트 손잡이를 잡는다.

“Thank you for helping us,” I tell him.

“도와주셔서 감사합니다.” 나는 그에게 말한다.

“Not a problem. We all need to help one another.”

“별거 아니야. 우리 모두 서로 도와야지.”

He smiles again, and I return the smile.

그는 다시 미소를 짓고 나도 미소로 화답한다.

It is good to know that difficult times can bring out the best in people.

어려운 시기에 사람들의 장점이 드러난다는 것을 알게 되는 것은 좋은 일이다.

I decide that one favor deserves another.

나는 호의에는 호의로 보답해야 한다고 결심한다.

“Why don’t you take a bag of ice for yourself,” I suggest.

“얼음 한 봉지 가져가세요.” 내가 제안한다.

His smile does not fade.

그의 미소가 사라지지 않는다.

“I have a better idea,” he says.

“더 좋은 생각이 있어.” 그가 말한다.

“Why don’t you take a bag of ice for yourselves, and I’ll keep the rest.”

“너희가 얼음 한 봉지 가져가고 나머지는 내가 가질게.”
