Many men around the world have beards.

전 세계의 많은 남성들은 수염이 있다.

Interestingly, Russian men had to pay money to have beards under the rule of Peter the Great, a powerful Russian czar.

Peter the Great wanted to make the country more like Western Europe.

He introduced many things from Western Europe, such as laws, a military system, and even fashion.

At that time, many Western European men shaved, but Russian men grew long beards.

So Peter the Great tried to make all Russian men shave.

If a man wanted to grow a beard, he had to pay a tax.
