When we read numbers, the first digit influences us more than the last one.
This is related to the way we read and process numbers.
For example, $799 feels much cheaper than $800 because it starts with a 7, while the first digit of $800 is 8.
Since the 19th century, shopkeepers have used prices that end in a 9.
They do this to make their products look cheaper.
Surveys show that about a third to two-thirds of all retail prices end in a 9.
Even though we know this is a trick, we are still fooled.
In 2008, researchers in France monitored a local pizza restaurant.
It sold five types of pizza at €8.00 each.
However, when it lowered the price of one of the pizzas to €7.99, its sales rose from a third of the total to half.
Companies are always looking for ways to increase productivity.
Increasing productivity means getting more output with the same amount of resources.
When the manufacturing industry first began, the famous economist Adam Smith described a way of making production more efficient.
It is known as the "division of labor."
Manufacturing goods involves several different processes requiring different skills.
Smith gave the example of the process of making pins: straightening the wire, sharpening it, putting on a head, and polishing it.
In the traditional way, a single worker would do all these tasks and make 20 pins in a day.
But this work can be divided into separate tasks.
Each task is performed by a different worker.
Because each worker specializes in one job, they can work much faster without changing from one task to another.
Now 10 workers can produce thousands of pins in a day - a huge increase in productivity from the 200 pins that could be produced before.
