Many people think the number seven is lucky.

많은 사람들이 숫자 7이 행운을 가져다준다고 생각해요.

But what about the number twelve?

그런데 숫자 12는 어떨까요?

Long ago, people didn't have pencils and paper.

오래전에, 사람들은 연필과 종이가 없었어요.

So they couldn't easily write numbers.

그래서 숫자를 쉽게 쓸 수 없었어요.

But everyone has one thumb and four fingers on each hand, and the four fingers can bend into three parts.

그런데 모든 사람은 각 손에 엄지손가락 하나와 손가락 네 개가 있고, 그 네 개의 손가락은 세 부분으로 굽혀질 수 있어요.

When they needed to count, people used their thumbs to point to the twelve parts of their fingers.

그들이 세어야 할 때, 사람들은 엄지손가락으로 손가락의 열두 부분을 가리켰어요.

We use twelve to count many different things.

우리는 많은 것들을 셀 때 12를 사용해요.

A calendar has twelve months and a clock has twelve hours.

달력에는 12개월이 있고 시계에는 12시간이 있어요.

At the store, some things are sold in groups of twelve.

가게에서 어떤 물건들은 12개 묶음으로 팔려요.

This is called a dozen.

이것을 다스(dozen)라고 해요.

You can buy a dozen doughnuts or a dozen pencils.

도넛 한 다스나 연필 한 다스를 살 수 있어요.

The number twelve might not be lucky.

숫자 12는 행운을 가져다주지 않을 수도 있어요.

But it's certainly useful!

그런데 이 숫자는 분명히 유용해요!
