Everyone knows that summer is hot and winter is cold.

모두가 여름은 덥고 겨울은 춥다는 것을 알아요.

But why is that?

그런데 왜 그럴까요?

It is because the earth doesn't stand straight up.

지구가 똑바로 서 있지 않기 때문이에요.

Instead, the earth leans to one side as it moves around the sun.

대신, 지구는 태양 주위를 돌 때 한쪽으로 기울어져 있어요.

When it is summer, our part of the earth leans toward the sun.

여름이 되면, 지구의 우리가 사는 쪽이 태양을 향해 기울어져요.

The sunlight hits us directly.

햇빛이 직접적으로 우리에게 닿아요.

This heats up the earth, so the weather is hot in summer.

이것이 지구를 데워서 여름에는 날씨가 더워요.

When it is winter, our part of the earth leans away from the sun.

겨울이 되면, 지구의 우리가 사는 쪽이 태양에서 멀어지는 방향으로 기울어져요.

The sunlight is more spread out, so it becomes weaker.

햇빛이 더 퍼지기 때문에 햇빛이 약해져요.

That makes winter cold because we get less heat from the sun.

그것이 우리가 태양으로부터 열을 덜 받기 때문에 겨울을 춥게 만들어요.

So what would happen if the earth didn't lean to one side as it moved?

그렇다면 지구가 움직일 때 한쪽으로 기울어지지 않는다면 어떻게 될까요?

We wouldn't have any seasons!

우리에게 아무 계절이 없을 거예요!
