Keeping your body clean is closely related to staying healthy.

몸을 청결하게 유지하는 것은 건강을 유지하는 것과 밀접한 관련이 있다.

But there was a time when people avoided taking a bath to keep the body healthy.

하지만 몸을 건강하게 유지하기 위해 사람들이 목욕을 하는 것을 피한 때가 있었다.

Why?

왜일까?

In the 14th century, the Black Death killed about half of the people in Europe.

14세기에, 흑사병은 유럽인의 약 절반을 죽였다.

Doctors believed the disease was spread by bad air.

의사들은 그 병이 나쁜 공기에 의해 퍼진다고 믿었다.

And a layer of dirt on the body was considered protection against the disease.

그리고 몸의 때의 층은 질병으로부터 몸을 보호하는 것이라고 여겨졌다.

So they warned people to stop taking baths to keep the layer on their bodies.

Following their advice, people never took baths.

Instead of washing their bodies, most people simply changed their shirts.

King Louis XIV is known for bathing only twice in his lifetime.

However, he showed off that he changed his shirt three times a day.

To show he was clean, he would put on a clean shirt after exercising.

However, this wrong idea had at least one unexpected positive result.

Oils, powders, and scents were used to cover body odor at that time.

This led to the development of today’s perfumes.

Nauru is a tiny island located northeast of Australia.

It was once one of the richest countries in the world but today it is not.

What happened?

The island had been home to albatrosses for millions of years.

그 섬은 수백만 년 동안 알바트로스 새의 서식지였다.

Albatrosses left droppings everywhere, which later turned into rocks.

These rocks were a very important resource for making fertilizer, so they were traded at a higher price than oil.

The Nauru people made a lot of money by selling these rocks.

Education and healthcare were free, and there were no taxes.

Soon, the island ran out of rocks.

As people had cut down trees to mine for rocks, most of the island turned into a wilderness.

The island could no longer grow crops.

섬에서는 더 이상 농작물이 자라지 않았다.

The Nauru people had no choice but to eat unhealthy processed food imported from other countries.

나우루 사람들은 건강에 좋지 않은 다른 나라에서 수입된 가공 식품을 먹을 수 밖에 없었다.

Therefore, most of them suffer from diabetes and obesity today.

그 결과, 그들 중 대다수가 오늘날 당뇨병과 비만으로 고통받고 있다.

In addition, since people haven’t worked for a long time, they have forgotten how to fish and even farm.

All this happened in less than 100 years.
