Long ago, there lived a stonecutter.

먼 옛날, 한 석공이 살았다.

Every day he removed slabs of rock from a nearby mountain.

매일 그는 근처의 산에서 돌 조각을 잘라냈다.

Although life was hard, he was quite happy.

비록 삶은 힘들었지만, 그는 꽤 행복했다.

One day while he was working, the sun’s rays were so unbearable that the stonecutter almost fainted.

어느 날 일을 하던 중, 그 석공은 햇빛이 너무 견딜 수 없이 강해서 기절할 뻔했다.

“The sun is so strong. I wish I were the sun!“ he cried.

”태양은 너무 강해. 내가 태양이라면 좋겠어!” 그는 외쳤다.

A voice answered him, “Your wish is heard!“

“네 소원을 들었노라!”라고 한 목소리가 그에게 답했다.

It was the mountain spirit.

그것은 산의 정령이었다.

People said it appeared from time to time and granted people’s wishes.

사람들은 그것이 때때로 나타나 사람들의 소원을 들어준다고 했다.

Suddenly, he was lifted into the air and transformed into the sun.

갑자기, 그는 공중으로 들어 올려져 태양으로 바뀌었다.

From high above, he scorched the land.

높은 곳에서, 그는 땅을 그을렸다.

But then a cloud blocked all his rays.

하지만 한 구름이 그의 광선을 막았다.

Angry, he yelled, “This cloud is stronger than I am. I wish I were a cloud!“

화가 나, 그는 소리쳤다, “이 구름이 나보다 강해. 내가 구름이면 좋겠어!”
