Plants Can Speak

식물은 말할 수 있다

Communication means exchanging information through signals.

의사소통은 신호를 통해 정보를 교환하는 것을 의미한다.

We know that many animals constantly communicate with each other.

우리는 많은 동물이 서로 끊임없이 의사소통한다는 것을 알고 있다.

In contrast, plants are often regarded as silent, unmoving organisms incapable of such signaling.

이와 대조적으로, 식물은 그러한 신호를 보낼 수 없는 조용하고 움직이지 않는 유기체로 종종 여겨진다.

However, plants do communicate—with other plants as well as with animals.

그러나 식물은 동물뿐만 아니라 다른 식물들과도 의사소통한다.

They do this primarily by using chemicals and sound.

그들은 주로 화학 물질과 소리를 사용하여 이것을 한다.

All plants emit signaling chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are everywhere around us.

모든 식물은 휘발성 유기 화합물(VOC)이라는 신호 화학 물질을 내뿜는데, 그것은 우리 주변 어디에나 있다.

For example, the smell of freshly cut grass is caused by a VOC.

예를 들어, 갓 깎은 잔디의 냄새는 VOC에 의해 발생한다.

Some of these plant VOCs are chemically similar to the pheromones used by animals like mice and ants.

이러한 식물 VOC 중 일부는 쥐나 개미와 같은 동물에 의해 사용되는 페로몬과 화학적으로 유사하다.

Therefore, these VOCs can attract insects for pollination and seed scattering.

그러므로 이런 VOC는 수분과 씨뿌리기를 하기 위해 곤충을 유인할 수 있다.
