Long ago, a farmer and his three sons raised horses on a farm.

먼 옛날, 한 농부와 그의 세 아들이 농장에서 말을 길렀다.

When the farmer died, he left a will.

농부가 죽으면서 유언을 남겼다.

It said, “I give my seventeen horses to my three sons.

유언장에는 “나는 세 아들에게 17마리의 말을 준다.

My oldest son gets one half of the horses, my middle son gets one third of the horses, and my youngest son gets one ninth of the horses.”

첫째 아들은 말의 절반을 받고, 둘째 아들은 말의 1/3을, 그리고 막내아들은 말의 1/9을 받는다.”라고 쓰여 있었다.

The three sons were confused because they could not divide 17 by 2, 3, or 9.

세 아들은 17을 2, 3, 또는 9로 나눌 수가 없었기 때문에 혼란스러웠다.

So they asked a wise man for advice.

그래서 그들은 현인에게 조언을 구했다.

He said, “You can solve this problem with a little help from your neighbor.”

그는 “너희는 이웃으로부터 도움을 좀 받아 이 문제를 해결할 수 있다.”라고 말했다.

He told them to borrow a horse from their neighbor.

그는 그들에게 이웃으로부터 말 한 마리를 빌려 오라고 말했다.

Now the three sons had a total of eighteen horses.

이제 세 아들에게는 총 18마리의 말이 있었다.

The wise man gave the oldest son a half of the eighteen horses, nine horses.

그 현인은 첫째 아들에게 18마리의 절반인, 9마리의 말을 주었다.

The middle son got one third, six horses.

둘째 아들은 1/3인 6마리를 받았다.

And the youngest son got one ninth, two horses.

그리고 막내아들은 1/9인 2마리를 받았다.

He said, “Nine plus six plus two is seventeen.

그는 “9 더하기 6 더하기 2는 17이다.

Now you can return the eighteenth horse to your neighbor.”

이제 너희는 18번째 말을 이웃에게 돌려주어도 된다.”라고 말했다.

In the end, everyone received the right number of horses!

결국 모두가 정확한 수의 말을 받았다!

We use soap every day to wash our hands.

Soap is made up of molecules, and these molecules have two different parts.

One part loves water, while the other part hates it.

When you wash your dirty hands with soap, the water-hating parts attach to the dirt and oil on your hands, while the water-loving parts bind with water.

당신이 더러운 손을 비누로 씻을 때, 물을 싫어하는 부분은 손에 있는 때와 기름에 달라붙고, 반면 물을 좋아하는 부분은 물과 뭉친다.

So, the dirt and oil become surrounded by soap molecules, and they form tiny clusters.

그래서 때와 기름은 비누의 분자에 둘러싸이게 되고 그것들이 작은 무리를 형성한다.

These clusters are washed away when you rinse your hands with water.

이 무리들은 손을 물로 씻을 때 씻겨져 나간다.

Your hands are now clean!

당신의 손은 지금 깨끗하다!

If you wash your hands with water only, the dirt and oil on your hands cannot be removed.

만약 당신이 물로만 손을 씻는다면, 손에 있는 때와 기름은 제거될 수 없다.

This is because water and oil do not mix.

이것은 물과 기름이 섞이지 않기 때문이다.

Soap works like a bridge between water and oil, so the dirt on your skin can be easily rinsed away.

비누는 물과 기름 사이에서 다리와 같은 역할을 해서 당신의 피부에 있는 때는 쉽게 씻겨질 수 있다.
