An older woman in full traditional Palestinian dress, just like my grandma wore, was crying on the floor.

꼭 우리 할머니가 입으셨던 것처럼, 몸 전체를 덮는 팔레스타인 전통 드레스를 입은 한 나이 든 여성이 바닥에 앉아 울고 있었다.

“Help,” said the flight agent.

“도와주세요.” 항공사 직원이 말했다.

“Talk to her. What is her problem? We told her the flight was going to be late and she did this.”

”그녀에게 말씀 좀 해 보세요. 그녀의 문제가 뭔가요? 저희가 비행기가 지연될 거라고 말씀드렸더니 이러시네요.”

I bent down to put my arm around the woman and spoke awkwardly.

나는 몸을 굽혀 그 여성에게 팔을 두르고 서투르게 말했다.

“Shu-dow-a, Shu-bid-uck Habibti? Stani schway, Min fadlick, Shu-bit-se-wee?”

“슈도와, 슈비덕 하비브티? 스타니 슈웨이, 민 파들릭, 슈빗세위? (무슨 일이세요, 아주머니? 잠깐만요, 왜 그러시나요?)”

The minute she heard any words she knew, however poorly they were used, she stopped crying.

그녀는 자신이 아는 단어를 듣자마자, 그것이 아무리 형편없이 사용되었더라도, 울음을 그쳤다.

She thought the flight had been canceled entirely.

그녀는 항공편이 완전히 취소되었다고 생각했다.

She needed to be in El Paso for major medical treatment the next day.

그녀는 다음날 중요한 병원 치료를 받기 위해 엘파소에 있어야 했다.

I said, “You’re fine, you’ll get there, who is picking you up? Let’s call him.”

나는 “괜찮아요, 그곳에 가게 되실 거예요, 누가 당신을 데리러 나오나요? 우리 그분께 전화해 봐요.”라고 말했다.

We called her son, I spoke with him in English, saying I would stay with his mother until we got on the plane.

우리는 그녀의 아들에게 전화를 걸었고, 나는 그와 영어로 대화하며 비행기에 탈 때까지 내가 그의 어머니와 함께 있을 것이라고 말했다.
