Day 60 Spacewalk!

60일차 우주 유영!

Today’s mission required a spacewalk, one of the riskiest tasks on the ISS.

오늘의 임무는 ISS에서 하는 가장 위험한 업무 중 하나인 우주 유영이 필요했다.

We had to install the bases for some newly developed solar batteries on the outside of the station.

우리는 새로 개발된 태양열 전지를 위한 토대를 우주정거장 외부에 설치해야 했다.

Scott, my colleague, and I went to an airlock, a room connected to the outside of the station, put on our spacesuits, and floated gently into space.

동료인 Scott과 나는 우주정거장의 외부와 연결된 방인 에어록으로 가서 우주복을 입고 우주로 부드럽게 몸을 띄웠다.

The large blue dome of Earth hovered overhead, looking like it was ready to come crashing down upon us.

지구의 거대한 푸른 돔이 우리 위로 내려와 부딪힐 듯이 머리 위에 떠 있었다.

Forcing myself to focus on the task, I secured the hook of my safety cable to a ring just outside the airlock.

작업에 집중하도록 스스로를 다잡으면서 나는 안전줄의 고리를 에어록 바로 바깥쪽 원형 고리에 걸었다.

We moved along the handrail to the edge of the station.

우리는 난간을 따라 우주정거장의 끝까지 이동했다.

The dark void in front of us seemed endless.

우리 바로 앞 컴컴한 허공은 끝이 없어 보였다.

Despite the safety cable, panic rose in me.

안전줄에도 불구하고 내 안에서 공포가 올라왔다.

I thought, “If my hand misses the handrail, I will fall into the void.”

"내가 난간을 놓치면 저 허공 속으로 떨어질 거야"라는 생각이 들었다.

The task seemed to take forever, but I finally managed to install the battery bases.

작업은 끝나지 않을 듯 오래 걸렸지만 마침내 나는 배터리 토대들을 설치해 내었다.

When I turned my head, the bright blue Earth was still there.

고개를 돌리자 환하고 푸른 지구가 여전히 거기에 있었다.

In the middle of darkness, its beauty was beyond description.

어둠의 한 가운데에 있는 지구의 아름다움이란 형언할 수 없는 것이었다.
