Let’s go back to the procession.

행차로 돌아가 보지요.

The procession wasn’t just some fancy show for ordinary people.

행차는 일반인에게 보여 주기 위한 그저 화려한 쇼가 아니었어요.

It was actually a way for them to get up close and personal with the king.

그것은 사실 백성들이 왕에게 가까이 그리고 개인적으로 다가갈 수 있는 통로였어요.

King Jeongjo set up a chance during the procession for common people to meet him and to share their concerns.

정조는 행차 중에 일반 백성들이 왕을 만나고 고민을 나눌 수 있는 기회를 마련했습니다.

This was a big deal, especially for those who couldn’t read or write.

특히 글을 읽거나 쓸 수 없는 백성들에게 중요한 일이었어요.

They didn’t have any other way to tell the king what was on their minds, so this was a direct line to him.

그들은 왕에게 자신의 생각을 말할 다른 방법이 없었기 때문에 이 자리는 왕에게 통하는 직통 전화였던 셈입니다.

And here’s the cherry on top: through the procession, King Jeongjo made government more accessible.

그리고 금상첨화인 것은 바로 이 대목입니다: 행차를 통해 정조는 정부에 더 접근하기 쉽게 만들었어요.

During that time, the government used to hold exams to hire officials every three years.

당시 정부는 3년마다 관리 채용 시험을 치렀습니다.

So, there weren’t many chances available.

그래서 기회가 많지 않았죠.

He added special exams during the procession, giving more people a shot at joining the government.

정조는 행차 기간에 특별 시험을 추가해 더 많은 사람이 정부에 들어갈 수 있도록 시도할 수 있도록 했어요.

This move was innovative back then and made the government more diverse.

이 조치는 당시로써는 혁신적이었고 정부 구성원을 더욱 다양하게 만들었어요.
