In King Jeongjo’s mind were big plans for Hwaseong.
정조의 머릿 속에는 화성에 대한 큰 계획이 있었어요.
He wanted it to be a self-sufficient city with a strong military, farming, and trade as he hoped to make it the new capital, away from all the political chaos in Hanyang.
그는 화성을 한양의 정치적 혼란에서 벗어난 새로운 수도로 삼기를 희망해서 그것을 강한 군사력, 농업, 무역을 갖춘 자급자족 도시로 만들고자 했어요.
So King Jeongjo gathered the best talents, such as Jeong Yakyong, and let them bring together the finest architectural techniques of his time from both the East and the West to build Hwaseong Fortress.
그래서 정조는 화성을 건설하기 위해 정약용과 같은 최고의 인재들을 모으고 동서양의 당대 최고의 건축 기술을 집약하도록 했어요.

He treated his people well during the construction of the fortress.
정조는 성곽을 쌓는 동안 백성들을 잘 대우했습니다.
They received fair wages and breaks during bad weather and were even paid when they were sick, something that was unheard of at that time.
그들은 정당한 임금을 받았고 악천후 시에는 휴식을 취했으며, 병이 났을 때에도 임금을 받았는데 당시로서는 전례가 없는 일이었어요.
Back then, ordinary people were typically required to work on public projects without getting paid.
당시 일반 백성들은 대개 임금을 받지 못한 채 공공 공사에 투입되는 것이 일반적이었지요.
Once people got wind of King Jeongjo’s plan, workers from all over the country came together in a rush.
정조의 계획에 대한 소문을 듣고 전국 각지에서 일꾼들이 한꺼번에 서둘려 몰려들었어요.
So, in under three years was the project finished, though it was initially thought to take about 10 years. Impressive, right?
그래서 처음에는 10년 정도 걸릴 것으로 예상했던 공사를 3년 만에 끝낼 수 있었어요. 인상적이지 않나요?
