Why did all of this happen?

이 모든 일이 왜 일어났던 것일까요?

The first thing King Jeongjo had in mind was to show respect to his family.

정조대왕이 가장 먼저 생각한 것은 가족에 대한 공경을 보여 주는 것이었어요.

It happened around his mother’s sixtieth birthday.

이 행사는 정조 어머니의 회갑 즈음에 이루어졌습니다.

Back in the Joseon Dynasty, just like today, turning 60 years old had a special meaning.

조선 시대에도 지금과 마찬가지로 회갑은 특별한 의미가 있었어요.

And his father’s tomb was near Hwaseong Haenggung.

그리고 그의 아버지의 묘가 화성행궁 근처에 있었습니다.

He was planning to hold a memorial service to honor his late father.

그는 돌아가신 아버지를 기리는 제사를 지낼 계획이었어요.

By combining the two events, he was telling everyone how much family meant to him.

이 두 가지 행사를 결합함으로써 그는 가족이 그에게 얼마나 큰 의미가 있는지 모두에게 말했던 것이죠.

But wait. There’s more.

하지만 잠깐만요. 더 있어요.

King Jeongjo was also making a statement about the Joseon Dynasty’s strength.

정조대왕은 조선왕조의 힘에 대해 말하는 것이기도 했어요.

He dressed up like a military leader, wearing armor and sitting on a horse with his soldiers marching in perfect order.

그는 그의 병사들이 일사불란하게 행진하는 가운데, 갑옷을 입고 말 위에 앉아 장수처럼 차려입었어요.

It was a way of saying, “We’re ready to protect our land.”

‘우리는 이 땅을 지킬 준비가 되었다’고 말하는 한 방식이었죠.

He was really serious about making the Joseon Dynasty a powerful and successful kingdom.

정조는 진심으로 조선을 부강하고 성공적인 나라로 만들고자 했어요.
