The Tale of the Boiling Frog and Our Climate Crisis

끓는 개구리 이야기와 우리의 기후 위기

Two frogs are peacefully minding their own business in a pond when a chef suddenly captures them.

개구리 두 마리가 연못에서 평화롭게 자기 일에만 신경 쓰고 있는데 갑자기 한 요리사가 그들을 포획한다.

They find themselves in a kitchen, where they are held captive by the chef.

그들은 주방에 있는 자신들을 발견하는데, 그곳에서 그들은 요리사에게 붙잡혀 있다.

The chef boils water and throws one of the frogs into it.

요리사는 물을 끓이고 개구리 중 하나를 그 안에 던진다.

The frog, feeling the intense heat, immediately jumps out and escapes through the window.

그 개구리는 강렬한 열기를 느끼고 즉시 뛰쳐나와 창문을 통해 탈출한다.

The chef fills the pot again but this time with cool water and without turning on the stove.

요리사는 냄비를 다시 채우는데 이번에는 시원한 물로 채우고 스토브를 켜지 않는다.

He drops the second frog into the pot, and the frog feels comfortable in it.

그는 두 번째 개구리를 냄비 안에 떨어뜨리고, 개구리는 그 안에서 편안함을 느낀다.

Gradually, the chef turns up the heat.

점차, 요리사가 불을 높인다.

The water temperature increases so slowly that the frog does not notice.

수온이 너무 천천히 올라가서 개구리는 눈치채지 못한다.

In fact, it simply enjoys the pleasantly warm water.

사실, 그 개구리는 그저 기분 좋게 따뜻한 물을 즐긴다.

Only when the surface begins to bubble does the frog realize that it is in trouble.

표면이 보글보글 끓기 시작한 때에야 비로소 개구리는 자신이 곤경에 처했음을 깨닫는다.

In fact, this tale is not scientifically true of frogs.

사실, 이 이야기는 개구리에 대해 과학적으로 사실이 아니다.

In reality, a frog will detect the gradual increase in water temperature and leap to safety.

실제로는, 개구리가 수온의 점진적인 상승을 감지하고 안전한 곳으로 뛰어오를 것이다.
