희소성에서 욕망으로

Do you like potatoes?

여러분은 감자를 좋아하는가?

French fries, potato pancakes, and potato soup are some of many potato dishes people love.

감자튀김, 감자 팬케이크, 그리고 감자수프는 사람들이 아주 좋아하는 많은 감자 요리 중 일부이다.

The potato was first brought to Europe from South America in the 16th century.

감자는 16세기에 남아메리카에서 유럽으로 처음 들어왔다.

However, people in Prussia (now Germany) and France refused to eat them until the 18th century.

그러나, 프로이센(지금의 독일)과 프랑스 사람들은 18세기까지 감자를 먹는 것을 거부했다.

King Frederick II of Prussia realized the value of potatoes during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748).

프로이센의 프리드리히 2세 왕은 오스트리아 왕위 계승 전쟁(1740-1748) 중에 감자의 가치를 깨달았다.

Frederick believed potatoes would keep his people from starving during wars.

프리드리히는 감자가 전쟁 중에 자신의 백성들을 굶주리지 않게 해 줄 것이라고 믿었다.

This plant from South America was easy to grow.

남아메리카에서 온 이 식물은 재배하기 쉬웠다.

It also provided a lot of nutrition very quickly and did not need very much land.

그것은 또한 많은 영양을 매우 빠르게 제공했고 아주 많은 땅이 필요하지도 않았다.

Determined to have his people eat potatoes, Frederick passed an order to ensure they were cultivated.

자신의 백성들에게 감자를 먹이기로 결심하고, 프리드리히는 감자가 반드시 재배되도록 명령을 내렸다.

Unfortunately, the peasants were not too keen on the idea.

불행하게도, 농민들은 그 생각에 크게 호의적이지 않았다.

In Prussia, there was a saying: “What the peasant does not know, he will not eat.”

프로이센에는 이러한 속담이 있었다. "농민이 모르는 것을, 농민은 먹지 않을 것이다."

In fact, this was the official response from one Prussian town to the king’s order:

실제로, 이것이 한 프로이센 마을에서 나온 왕의 명령에 대한 공식 응답이었다.

“Potatoes have neither smell nor taste. Not even the dogs will eat them. So what use are they to us?”

"감자는 냄새도 맛도 없다. 개조차 그것들을 먹지 않을 것이다. 그렇다면 그것들이 우리에게 무슨 쓸모가 있단 말인가?"
