How Do Birds Fly without Stopping?

새들은 어떻게 멈추지 않고 날까?

In 2013, researchers presented the first evidence that migratory birds like Alpine swifts can fly without a break for over six months.

2013년에 연구원들은 흰배칼새(알파인 스위프트)와 같은 철새들이 6개월 넘는 기간 동안 쉬지 않고 날 수 있다는 최초의 증거를 제시했다.

They captured six Alpine swifts, put monitoring devices on them, let them go, and recaptured three of them after a year.

그들은 여섯 마리의 흰배칼새를 포획하여 그들에게 감시 장치를 달았고, 그들을 놓아주고 1년 후에 그들 중 세 마리를 다시 포획했다.

To the researchers’ surprise, the data gathered by the equipment indicated that the birds had most likely flown without landing for 200 days.

연구자들이 놀랍게도, 그 장비로 수집된 데이터는 그 새들이 200일 동안 착륙하지 않고 비행했을 가능성이 가장 높다는 것을 보여 주었다.

Alpine swifts feed on aerial plankton so they need not land for food.

But what about sleep?

The data implied that the birds had slept during flight but that this was not full recovery sleep.

They may have been in a state where half of their brain slept while the other half remained alert.
