세금은 우리 주변 어디에나 있다

Do you know about taxes?

세금에 대해 알고 있나요?

Building roads or running schools needs a lot of money, and that money comes from taxes.

도로를 건설하거나 학교를 운영하는 데는 많은 돈이 필요합니다. 그 돈은 세금에서 나오죠.

You may think, ‘I don’t care about taxes. I don’t pay them. I’m just a teen!‘

여러분은 아마 "난 세금이랑 상관없어. 난 세금을 내지 않는데! 난 그저 십 대일 뿐이야!"라고 생각할지도 모릅니다.

But here’s a surprising secret: you pay taxes too!

하지만 여기 놀라운 비밀이 있습니다: 여러분도 세금을 내고 있어요!

Why Do countries Collect Taxes?

왜 국가는 세금을 걷을까요?

Your family needs money to run your home.

여러분의 가족은 집을 운영하는 데 돈이 필요합니다.

In just the same way, countries need money, too.

마찬가지로, 국가도 돈이 필요합니다.

Taxes are like money in a piggy bank for a country.

세금은 국가를 위한 돼지 저금통과 같습니다.

Everyone puts a little money into it, and then that money is used for public things like roads and schools.

모든 사람이 조금씩 돈을 저금통에 넣고, 그 돈은 도로와 학교 같은 공공 서비스에 사용됩니다.

Taxes have a long history.

세금은 오랜 역사를 가지고 있습니다.

Even in the old days, countries collected them to keep their people safe and manage their land.

옛날에도 국가들은 사람들을 안전하게 보호하고, 땅을 관리하기 위해 세금을 걷었습니다.

In 1696, after a long war with France, England needed a lot of money.

1696년, 영국은 프랑스와의 긴 전쟁 후에 많은 돈이 필요했습니다.

England wanted rich people to pay more taxes.

영국은 부유한 사람들이 더 많은 세금을 내기를 원했습니다.

So, it made a window tax.

그래서 창문세(Window Tax)를 만들었습니다.

Rich people usually lived in large houses with many windows.

부자들은 일반적으로 창문이 많은 큰 집에 살았습니다.

More windows meant more taxes.

창문이 많을수록 세금이 증가했죠.

What Kinds of Taxes Do People Pay?

사람들은 어떤 종류의 세금을 내나요?

People pay different kinds of taxes.

사람들은 여러 종류의 세금을 냅니다.

Here are the main ones.

다음은 대표적인 세금의 종류입니다.

Income tax: People who earn money from their jobs pay income tax.

소득세 (Income Tax): 직장에서 돈을 버는 사람들은 소득세를 냅니다.

Sales tax: All people pay sales tax on the things that they buy.

판매세 (Sales Tax): 모든 사람들은 물건을 살 때 판매세를 냅니다.

For example, when you buy bread, you pay sales tax.

예를 들어, 빵을 살 때도 판매세를 냅니다.

Property tax: People who won houses or land have to pay property tax.

재산세 (Property Tax): 집이나 땅을 소유한 사람들은 재산세를 내야 합니다.

What Do Taxes Do?

세금은 무엇을 할까요?

Taxes do a lot of good things for us!

세금은 우리를 위해 많은 좋은 일을 합니다!

Thanks to taxes, we get free education at middle school.

세금 덕분에 우리는 중학교에서 무료 교육을 받을 수 있습니다.

Taxes are used for our environment.

세금은 환경을 위해서도 사용됩니다.

They pay for the clean air and water which we need.

세금은 우리가 필요한 깨끗한 공기와 물을 위해 쓰입니다.

Taxes also pay for our safety, like streetlights by roads.

또한, 도로 옆 가로등 같은 안전 시설을 위해서도 사용됩니다.

So, you can ask the country to put more streetlights in dark places.

그래서 우리는 어두운 곳에 더 많은 가로등을 설치해 달라고 국가에 요청할 수 있습니다.

Taxes are all around us.

세금은 우리 주변 어디에나 있습니다.

They pay for things that we use every day.

세금은 우리가 매일 사용하는 것들을 위해 쓰입니다.

They can make our lives better.

세금은 우리의 삶을 더 좋게 만들 수 있습니다.

But if they are wasted, we can’t get the services that we need.

하지만 만약 세금이 낭비된다면, 우리는 필요한 서비스를 받을 수 없습니다.

So, taxes must be used wisely.

그러므로 세금은 현명하게 사용되어야 합니다.

We need to see that taxes are used the right way.

우리는 세금이 올바른 방식으로 사용되는지 확인할 필요가 있어요.
