The Baby Turtles’ Journey at Night

아기 바다거북들의 밤 여행

The following story is from Follow the Moon Home, which is a non-fiction book written by Philippe Cousteau and Deborah Hopkinson.

다음 이야기는 Philippe Cousteau와 Deborah Hopkinson이 쓴 논픽션 책 Follow the Moon Home에서 가져온 것이다.

The book is based on a true story of a group of children who started a campaign to help baby turtles.

이 책은 아기 바다거북들을 돕기 위해 캠페인을 시작한 아이들의 실제 이야기를 바탕으로 하고 있다.

My name is Vivian.

제 이름은 Vivian이에요.

I just moved to a town by the sea.

저는 얼마 전 바닷가 근처 마을로 이사 왔어요.

One Saturday night, I went to the sea with my mother and we took a walk around the beach.

어느 토요일 밤, 엄마와 함께 바다로 가서 해변을 산책했어요.

There, many baby turtles were crawling out of their nests built in the sand.

거기엔, 모래 속에 지어진 둥지에서 많은 아기 바다거북들이 기어 나오고 있었어요.

I asked my mom,

저는 엄마에게 물었어요,

“Are those cute baby turtles trying to find their way to the sea?

“저 귀여운 아기 바다거북들이 바다로 가는 길을 찾고 있는 거예요?

But they seem confused and lost.”

그런데 혼란스럽고 길을 잃은 것 같아 보여요.”

My mom answered,

엄마가 대답했어요,

“Baby turtles follow the moonlight to go to the sea.

“아기 바다거북들은 달빛을 따라 바다로 간단다.

But they are going the wrong way because of the bright lights from the beach houses.

그런데 해변가 집들의 밝은 불빛 때문에 길을 잘못 가고 있어.

When they cannot find their way to the sea, they die.”

바다로 가는 길을 찾지 못하면 죽게 되지.”

I felt so sad. I wanted to help the turtles.

저는 너무 슬펐어요. 저는 바다거북들을 돕고 싶었어요.

Next Monday at school, I told the class about the poor turtles.

다음 주 월요일에 학교에서 저는 가엾은 바다거북들의 이야기를 반 친구들에게 들려줬어요.

My classmates all felt sorry for them.

친구들은 모두 바다거북들을 안쓰럽게 느꼈어요.

We made a "Save the Turtle Campaign" group.

우리는 “바다거북 구하기 캠페인” 모임을 만들었어요.

Our group was not certain about what to do, so we brainstormed solutions.

우리 모임은 무엇을 해야 할지 확신이 없어서, 함께 해결책을 떠올려 보았어요.

"People should know about the problem," I said.

저는 “사람들이 이 문제를 알아야 해,”라고 말했어요.

Samson suggested, "Why don't we invite neighbors to a town meeting?"

Samson이 “이웃들을 마을 회의에 초대하는 게 어때?”라고 제안했어요.

Rebecca agreed, "That's a good idea!"

Rebecca가 “좋은 생각이야!”라고 동의했어요.

All in the group did their part in preparing for the meeting.

모임에 속한 모두는 회의를 준비하면서 각자 맡은 일을 했어요.

Rebecca made posters and Samson put them up in the neighborhood.

Rebecca는 포스터를 만들고, Samson은 동네에 붙였어요.

Max spread the word on the Internet.

Max는 인터넷에 소식을 알렸죠.

I wrote about the town meeting in the local newspaper.

저는 지역 신문에 마을 회의에 관한 글을 썼어요.

On the meeting day, the town hall was full of neighbors.

회의가 있던 날, 마을 회관은 이웃들로 가득 찼어요.

Our group explained to them that the baby turtles lose their way because of the bright lights from the houses.

우리는 아기 바다거북들이 집에서 나오는 밝은 불빛 때문에 길을 잃는다고 이웃들에게 설명했어요.

They all talked about how to save baby turtles.

이웃들은 모두 아기 바다거북들을 구하는 방법에 관해 이야기했어요.

Many volunteered for starting a campaign to turn off lights at night.

많은 사람들이 밤에 불 끄는 캠페인을 시작하자고 자원했어요.

Others agreed to patrol the beach together and protect the nests.

다른 이웃들은 함께 해변을 순찰하며 둥지를 지키는 데 동의 했어요.

I went on a turtle patrol with my classmates and volunteers.

저는 친구들과 자원봉사자들과 함께 바다거북을 위한 순찰에 나섰어요.

Everyone smiled because the lights along the beach went out one by one.

해변가의 불빛이 하나씩 꺼지자 모두 미소를 지었어요.

The shining moon was bright like silver.

빛나는 달은 은처럼 밝았어요.

Soon, tiny turtles crawled out of the nests.

곧, 작은 바다거북들이 둥지에서 기어 나왔어요.

Then, the turtles moved slowly over the sand and disappeared into the sea.

그 후, 그들은 모래 위를 천천히 움직이며 바다로 사라졌어요.

We remained silent with wonder and followed the moon home just like the turtles.

우리는 경이감 속에 침묵을 지키며 바다거북들처럼 달빛을 따라 집으로 돌아갔어요.
