The Old Man and the Sea

노인과 바다

The Old Man and the Sea is about an old man called Santiago.

'노인과 바다'는 Santiago라는 불린 노인에 관한 이야기이다.

Santiago hadn’t caught a fish in 84 days, so people thought he was unlucky, maybe cursed.

Santiago는 84일 동안 물고기를 잡지 못했기 때문에 사람들은 그가 운이 나쁘거나, 어쩌면 저주를 받은 것이라고 생각했다.

In order to change his terrible luck, Santiago decided to go out into the deep ocean, far beyond the other fishermen.

자신의 지독한 운을 바꾸기 위해 Santiago는 다른 어부들보다 훨씬 더 깊은 바다로 나가기로 결심했다.

At first, he only caught a small tuna, but at the end of the 85th day, a powerful, magnificent marlin bit Santiago’s fishing hook.

처음에는 그는 겨우 작은 참치 한 마리만을 잡았으나 85일째 날이 끝날 무렵, 힘세고 거대한 청새치가 Santiago의 낚싯바늘을 물었다.

The fish was so strong it dragged Santiago’s boat for three days.

그 물고기는 너무 강해서 Santiago의 배를 3일 동안 끌고 다녔다.

Santiago learned to respect the fish, to admire its courage, and to appreciate its beauty.

Santiago는 그 물고기를 존경하고, 그 용기에 감탄하고, 그 아름다움을 높이 평가하게 되었다.

When it finally died, he saw it was too big to put inside the boat.

마침내 그것이 죽었을 때 그는 그것이 너무 커서 배 안에 넣을 수 없다는 것을 알았다.

Instead, he tied it to the side of his boat and tried to return home.

대신에 그는 그것을 배 옆에 묶고 집으로 돌아가려고 했다.

Unfortunately, a shark smelled the marlin’s blood and threatened to eat Santiago’s prized fish.

불행하게도 상어 한 마리가 청새치의 피 냄새를 맡고 Santiago의 소중한 물고기를 먹어치우겠다고 위협했다.

Santiago saw the shark’s jaws opening and closing in anticipation.

Santiago는 상어의 턱이 기대에 차서 열리고 닫히는 것을 보았다.

He knew this shark no longer cared about the dangers of a boat or of a fisherman.

그는 이 상어가 더 이상 배나 어부로 인한 위험에 관해 신경 쓰지 않는다는 것을 알았다.

The smell of blood took away the shark’s fear, making it brave and reckless.

피 냄새가 상어의 두려움을 없애고, 그것을 용감하고 무모하게 만들었다.

Santiago didn’t have much rope left over from tying up the marlin, but he tightened the short remaining piece of rope into a knot on his spear.

Santiago는 청새치를 묶고 남은 밧줄이 별로 없었지만, 남은 짧은 밧줄 조각을 창에 단단히 조여 매듭을 지었다.

The shark got closer and closer, mouth open and teeth shining in the sunlight.

상어는 점점 더 가까워졌고, 입이 벌어지고 이빨이 햇빛에 반짝이고 있었다.

Santiago’s mind felt strong and clear, his willpower restored.

Santiago의 정신은 강해지고 맑아졌으며, 의지력이 회복되었다.

The spear wasn’t very long, too short to hit the shark before it arrived at the marlin.

창은 그다지 길지 않았고 상어가 청새치에 도달하기 전에 그것을 맞추기에는 너무 짧았다.

Still, Santiago refused to give up.

그럼에도 불구하고, Santiago는 포기하길 거부했다.

The shark’s eyes flashed and he bit the beautiful fish just above the tail.

상어의 눈이 번쩍이더니 그 아름다운 물고기의 꼬리 바로 위를 물었다.

It ripped and bit and took a huge piece of meat at least 40 pounds out of the giant marlin.

그것은 뜯어 물어서 거대한 청새치에서 적어도 40파운드에 달하는 커다란 고기 조각을 가져갔다.

The old man could hear the marlin’s skin tearing and bones breaking as he drove the spear into the shark’s head.

노인은 창을 상어의 머리에 꽂아 넣으며 청새치의 껍질이 찢어지고 뼈가 부러지는 소리를 들을 수 있었다.

He pushed the weapon in right behind the eyes and above the neck, where the brain was.

그는 그 무기를 뇌가 있는 바로 눈 뒤와 목 위로 밀어 넣었다.

It turned over, and he could see the shark’s eyes rolling in its head.

그것은 몸을 뒤집었고 그는 머리에서 상어의 눈알이 구르는 것을 볼 수 있었다.

It hit the water with its tail and turned the ocean water white with its struggling.

그것은 꼬리로 물을 내리쳤고 몸부림을 치며 바닷물을 하얗게 만들었다.

Santiago tried to get his spear out, but couldn’t.

Santiago는 자신의 창을 빼내려고 했지만 그럴 수가 없었다.

He had cast the spear too deep into the shark’s body, and the rope was too short.

그는 창을 상어의 몸에 너무 깊숙이 던졌고 밧줄은 너무 짧았다.

Even though its body struggled, the shark was already dead.

몸통은 버둥거렸지만, 상어는 이미 죽어 있었다.

After a moment, it lay still on the surface before sinking slowly into the water, taking the spear with it.

잠시 후, 그것은 수면 위에서 가만히 누워 있다가 창을 가지고 물속으로 천천히 가라앉았다.

So much of the marlin’s blood flowed into the water from where it had been bitten.

청새치가 물렸던 자리에서 아주 많은 양의 피가 물속으로 흘러 들어갔다.

Santiago knew more sharks would come before long.

Santiago는 머지않아 더 많은 상어가 몰려올 것임을 알았다.

He had no spear, and his boat was still many miles from the land.

그에게는 창이 없었고 그의 배는 육지에서 아직도 수 마일 떨어져 있었다.

The fisherman knew he would fail, understanding that he had no hope of protecting the beautiful marlin.

그 어부는 자신이 실패할 것임을 알았고, 아름다운 청새치를 지킬 가망이 전혀 없다는 것을 깨달았다.

Santiago didn’t care.

Santiago는 상관하지 않았다.

He would struggle as long as he could, even if he could not succeed.

그는 성공할 수 없더라도 가능한 한 오랫동안 싸울 터였다.

“A man can be destroyed,” he said.

“인간은 파멸당할 수는 있어,” 그가 말했다.

“But not defeated.”

“하지만 패배할 수는 없어.”

Santiago turned back to his boat and looked at the great fish.

Santiago는 배로 되돌아가서 거대한 물고기를 바라보았다.

The shark had ruined the marlin’s powerful tail and made it so ugly it hurt Santiago’s spirit whenever he looked at its torn flesh.

상어는 청새치의 강력한 꼬리를 망가뜨렸고 그것을 너무 흉하게 만들어서 Santiago가 찢어진 살점을 볼 때마다 그의 마음을 아프게 했다.

Santiago felt sorry for catching the marlin and wanted to apologize to the beautiful animal.

Santiago는 청새치를 잡은 것이 미안했고 그 아름다운 동물에게 사과하고 싶었다.

“Don’t think, old man,” he said.

“여보시게, 생각하지 말구려” 그가 말했다.

“Sail on this course and take it when it comes.”

“이 항로를 따라 항해하다가, 닥치면 그에 맞게 대처하게.”

But he couldn’t stop thinking.

하지만 그는 생각을 멈출 수 없었다.

Alone on the ocean, with the poor marlin’s blood spilling into the water, all he could do was think.

바다 위에서 홀로, 불쌍한 청새치의 피가 물속으로 쏟아지는 가운데, 그가 할 수 있는 일은 생각하는 것뿐이었다.

He thought of the great baseball player Joe DiMaggio.

그는 위대한 야구선수 Joe DiMaggio를 생각했다.

He wondered if Joe DiMaggio could have killed the shark without losing the spear.

그는 Joe DiMaggio라면 창을 잃지 않고 상어를 죽일 수 있었을지 궁금했다.

Santiago thought of his own injured hands and wondered how Joe DiMaggio could play baseball so well in spite of his own injuries.

Santiago는 자신의 다친 손을 생각하고 어떻게 Joe DiMaggio가 자신의 부상에도 불구하고 야구를 그렇게 잘할 수 있는지 궁금했다.

He wondered if he, like Joe DiMaggio, could ignore the unbearable pain and fatigue in his body long enough to meet his goals.

그는 Joe DiMaggio처럼 자신의 목표를 달성할 수 있을 만큼 오랫동안 몸의 견딜 수 없는 고통과 피로를 무시할 수 있을지 궁금했다.

“Think about something cheerful, old man,” he said.

“여보시게, 뭔가 기분 좋은 것을 생각해 보구려.” 그가 말했다.

“Every minute now you are closer to home.

“이제 매 순간 집에 더 가까워지고 있소.

You sail lighter for the loss of 40 pounds.”

40파운드를 잃어서 더 가볍게 나아가고 있소.”

However, Santiago knew this was false hope.

그러나 Santiago는 이것이 거짓 희망이라는 것을 알고 있었다.

Too much blood in the water.

물속에 너무 많은 피가 있었다.

Too many sharks.

너무 많은 상어가 있었다.

Too far from land with these strong ocean currents.

이 강한 해류들로 인해 육지에서 너무 멀리 떨어져 있었다.

Still, the fisherman promised he would continue to fight.

그럼에도 불구하고, 어부는 계속 싸울 것이라고 다짐했다.

Neither fear nor the loss of his spear could take away his determination.

두려움도, 자신의 창을 잃은 것도 그의 결심을 앗아갈 수 없었다.

He had to come up with a new weapon, removing the rowing oars and attaching his knife to one.

그는 새로운 무기를 생각해내야 했고, 배를 젓는 노를 떼어 그 중 하나에 칼을 부착했다.

“Now,” he said.

“자,” 그가 말했다.

“I am still an old man. But I am not unarmed.”

“나는 여전히 노인이야. 하지만 나는 무기가 없지 않아.”

The breeze got stronger and his boat sped up.

미풍이 점차 강해지자 그의 배가 속력을 냈다.

He felt fresh, and his determination returned.

그는 상쾌한 기분이 들었고, 그의 결심이 되살아났다.

The sharks would almost certainly take his beautiful marlin, but Santiago would never cease fighting them.

상어들은 그의 아름다운 청새치를 거의 틀림없이 빼앗아 갈 것이지만 Santiago는 그들과 싸우는 것을 결코 멈추지 않을 터였다.

A man can be destroyed, but never defeated.

인간은 파멸당할 수는 있지만 절대 패배할 수는 없다.
