It’s their daily routine to help others, and they even put others before themselves.
다른 사람을 돕는 것이 그들의 일상이며, 그들은 심지어 자신보다 다른 사람들을 우선시한다.
Sister Carla is an excellent example of such a person.
칼라 수녀는 그런 사람의 훌륭한 예이다.
Often called the angel with blue eyes, she devoted her life to caring for patients with Hansen’s disease in the remote village of Hoam, Gochang, Jeollabuk-do.
흔히 파란 눈을 가진 천사라고 불리는 그녀는 전라북도 고창의 호암이라는 외딴 마을에서 한센병 환자들을 돌보는 데 평생을 바쳤다..
Born in Bernezzo, Italy in 1943, Sister Carla became a nun at the age of 19 and ended up caring for more than 120 war orphans.
1943년 이탈리아 Bernezzo에서 태어난 칼라 수녀는 19살에 수녀가 되어 결국 120명이 넘는 전쟁고아들을 돌보게 되었다.
“I thought that instead of starting a family and caring for my own children only, I could devote my life to caring for more children.”
“가정을 꾸리고 나 자신의 아이만을 돌보는 대신 더 많은 아이를 돌보는 데 평생을 바칠 수 있겠다고 생각했습니다.”
She added, “I also became a nun because I wanted to fulfill the dream of my late brother, who wanted to become a priest but passed away before he could.”
“또한 작고한 오빠의 꿈을 실현하고 싶어서 수녀가 되었는데, 오빠는 신부가 되고 싶었지만 미처 이루지 못하고 세상을 떠났습니다.”라고 그녀는 덧붙였다.
The 25-year-old Sister Carla came to Korea in 1968 after hearing about many war orphans and Hansen’s patients in Korea.
25살의 칼라 수녀는 1968년 한국에 많은 전쟁고아와 한센병 환자들에 대한 소식을 듣고 한국에 왔다.
Back then, people excluded Hansen’s patients from the general public due to various prejudices.
그 당시, 사람들은 여러 가지 편견 때문에 한센병 환자들을 일반 대중으로부터 배제했다.
People falsely believed that Hansen’s disease was highly contagious, and also felt uncomfortable with the appearance of Hansen’s patients.
사람들은 한센병이 전염성이 매우 높다고 잘못 믿었고, 한센병 환자의 겉모습을 불편하게 여겼다.
Nowhere was the place for those patients, and their miserable lives were passed on to their own children.
그러한 환자들을 위한 곳은 어디에도 없었고, 그들의 비참한 삶은 자식들에게 대물림되었다.
For Sister Carla, however, Hansen’s patients were equally noble human beings.
하지만 칼라 수녀에게 한센병 환자들은 똑같이 고귀한 인간이었다.
She accepted the pain of those patients as her own.
수녀는 환자들의 고통을 자신의 고통으로 받아들였다.
Sister Carla wanted to help the Hansen’s patients in as many ways as she could.
칼라 수녀는 가능한 한 많은 방법으로 한센병 환자들을 돕고 싶었다.
She raised pigs with the patients to help them become economically independent.
수녀는 환자들과 함께 돼지를 키우며 경제적으로 자립할 수 있도록 도왔다.
She started to learn Korean so she could understand each individual’s problems more deeply.
수녀는 환자 개개인의 문제를 더 깊이 이해할 수 있도록 한국어를 배우기 시작했다.
She struggled with the language at first, but after about two years, she was able to communicate with local people freely and truly understand the patients’ specific challenges.
처음에는 언어 때문에 어려움을 겪었지만, 2년 정도 후에는 현지인들과 자유롭게 소통할 수 있었고 환자들의 구체적인 어려움을 진정으로 이해할 수 있었다.
Additionally, she went to a hospital in Spain to study Hansen’s disease and earn a nurse’s assistant certification.
게다가 스페인의 한 병원에 가서 한센병에 관해 공부하고 간호보조원 자격증을 취득했다.
When she first began treating Hansen’s patients, she was able to treat them with only the small amount of medicine she received from German aid agencies.
처음 한센병 환자들을 치료하기 시작했을 때는 그녀가 독일 구호 기관에서 받은 소량의 약으로만 그들을 치료할 수 있었다.
“The saddest thing at the time was not the fact that there was a lack of medicine, but the prejudice towards the Hansen’s patients.
“당시 가장 슬펐던 것은 약이 부족하다는 사실이 아니라 한센병 환자들을 향한 편견이었습니다.
Because of that, the children of Hansen’s patients were not accepted by normal schools,” Sister Carla said.
그 때문에 한센병 환자 자녀들은 일반 학교에 받아들여지지 않았습니다.”라고 칼라 수녀는 말했다.
So she founded a school for the children of Hansen’s patients in the village.
그래서 수녀는 마을에 한센병 환자 자녀들을 위한 학교를 설립했다.
Otherwise, more than a hundred children wouldn’t have received proper education.
그렇지 않았다면 백 명이 넘는 아이들이 제대로 된 교육을 받지 못했을 것이다.
Her love for the Hansen’s patients is also reflected in her Korean name, “Kang Kalla.”
한센병 환자들에 대한 그녀의 사랑은 그녀의 한국 이름인 ‘강칼라’에도 나타나 있다.
She adopted the Korean family name “Kang” when the first patient she met at the Hoam Village told her, “I would really like you to use my family name.”
그녀는 호암마을에서 처음 만난 환자가 “제 성을 꼭 써주셨으면 해요.”라고 하는 말을 듣고 한국 성인 ‘강’을 채택했다.
As her personal name, she decided to use “Kalla,” which is the Korean pronunciation of her Catholic name, “Carla.”
자신의 개인 이름으로 ‘칼라’를 사용하기로 했는데, 그것은 그녀의 가톨릭 이름인 ‘Carla’의 한국식 발음이었다.
Sister Carla did her best to be there for anyone who needed her help, but sadly she didn’t have enough time to care for herself.
칼라 수녀는 자신의 도움이 필요한 사람 누구를 위해서나 그 자리에 있기 위해 최선을 다했지만, 안타깝게도 자신을 돌볼 시간이 충분하지 않았다.
She developed rheumatism but didn’t treat the disease properly because she was busy working for her patients.
그녀는 류머티즘에 걸렸지만 환자들을 위해 일하느라 바빠서 제대로 병을 치료하지 못했다.
As a result, her toes became severely twisted.
그 결과 그녀의 발가락은 심하게 뒤틀리게 되었다.
Her twisted toes reminded her neighbors of ginger roots, and so they called her toes “ginger feet.”
그녀의 뒤틀린 발가락은 그녀의 이웃들에게 생강 뿌리를 연상시켰고, 그래서 그들은 그녀의 발가락을 ‘생강 발’이라고 불렀다.
She devoted everything she had to the sick, lonely, and poor while she lived very frugally.

She wore a 30-year-old watch on her wrist and kept two pencils shorter than her little finger on her desk.

The beautiful 25-year-old woman aged into a grandma with silver hair.

Although many things changed, Sister Carla’s desire to sacrifice for others didn’t.
많은 것이 변했지만 다른 사람을 위해 희생하려는 칼라 수녀의 열망은 변하지 않았다.
In addition to helping the surviving Hansen’s patients, she continued to care for the elderly every day.
그녀는 살아남은 한센병 환자들을 돕는 일 외에도 매일 노인들을 돌보는 것을 계속했다.
Even in her old age, she took them to the hospital, did their dishes, and took care of problems at the bank for them.
노년이 되어서도 그들을 병원에 데려다주고, 설거지를 해주고, 은행 업무를 처리해 주었다.
She even went grocery shopping for them.
심지어 그들을 위해 식료품 쇼핑도 하러 갔다.
She used every bit of her time for those in need.
그녀는 모든 시간을 도움이 필요한 사람들을 위해 사용했다.
She continued working in the community, running a pottery-making program, and sold pottery to help senior citizens in poor neighborhoods.
지역사회에서 계속 일하며 도자기 만들기 프로그램을 운영했고, 가난한 동네의 노인들을 돕기 위해 도자기를 팔았다.
When asked how to live a valuable life, she replied: “When you live only for the benefit of yourself, your joy and happiness become that much smaller.
가치 있는 삶을 사는 방법에 대해 질문을 받았을 때 그녀는 답했다: “자신만의 이익을 위해 살면 당신의 기쁨과 행복은 그만큼 더 작아집니다.
But when you open your heart to other people, it changes your life.”

Sister Carla’s extraordinary life reminds us that we all can make a difference and that through our actions we can bring about a positive change in the lives of those who need help most.
칼라 수녀의 특별한 삶은 우리가 모두 변화를 만들 수 있으며, 우리의 행동을 통해 도움이 가장 필요한 사람들의 삶에 긍정적인 변화를 가져올 수 있다는 것을 일깨워준다.
As she said, being respectful, caring, and supportive towards others can improve our society and also bring us happiness.
그녀가 말한 것처럼, 타인을 존중하고 배려하며 지지하는 것은 우리 사회를 개선할 뿐만 아니라 우리에게 행복을 가져다줄 수 있다.
