The Five Whys

다섯 번의 왜

When we have a problem, we often wonder what the solution is.

우리는 문제가 있을 때, 종종 그 해결책이 무엇인지 궁금해한다.

We can sometimes find one by repeating the question, “Why?”.

우리는 때로 ‘왜?’라는 질문을 반복함으로써 해결책을 찾을 수 있다.

The following story shows the importance of asking “why” questions.

다음 이야기는 ‘왜’라는 질문을 하는 것의 중요성을 보여 준다.

The Jefferson Memorial is a famous building in Washington D.C.

Jefferson 기념관은 워싱턴 D.C.에 있는 유명한 건물이다.

It was built to honor Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the U.S.

이 건물은 미국의 제3대 대통령인 Thomas Jefferson을 기리기 위해 지어졌다.

One day, building caretakers noticed a lot of damage to the building.

어느 날, 건물 관리인들이 건물에 많은 손상이 있는 것을 발견했다.

They asked themselves a question,

그들은 스스로에게 질문을 했다.

“Why is this building so damaged?”

“왜 이 건물이 이렇게 손상되었을까?”

They soon realized that they were using strong soap to clean the building.

그들은 곧 건물을 청소할 때 강한 세제를 사용하고 있다는 것을 깨달았다.

Then, they asked another question,

그들은 그 후 또 다른 질문을 했다.

“Why do we need to use strong soap?”

“왜 우리는 강한 세제를 사용해야 할까?”

From this question, they realized that they used it to clean bird droppings off the building.

이 질문에서 그들은 새의 배설물을 청소하기 위해 사용하고 있다는 것을 깨달았다.

They kept asking,

그들은 계속해서 질문을 했다,

“Why do birds like to come to this building?”

“왜 새들은 이 건물에 오고 싶어할까?”

The answer was that they came to the building to eat spiders.

그 답은 새들이 거미를 먹기 위해 이 건물에 온다는 것이었다.

This led to another interesting question,

이것은 또 다른 흥미로운 질문으로 이어졌다.

“Why do spiders like to come to this building, then?”

“그렇다면 왜 거미들은 이 건물에 오고 싶어할까?”

They realized that spiders came to the building to eat bugs.

그들은 거미들이 벌레를 먹기 위해 이 건물에 온다는 것을 깨달았다.

Then, they asked again,

그들은 다시 물었다.

“Why do so many bugs come to this building?”

“왜 이렇게 많은 벌레가 이 건물에 올까?”

Since they could not find the answer, they asked a bug expert for help.

그들은 답을 찾을 수 없어서 곤충 전문가에게 도움을 요청했다.

He explained why many bugs came to the building.

그는 이 건물에 많은 벌레가 오는 이유를 설명해 주었다.

He said,

그는 말했다,

“Bugs are most active at sunset.

‘벌레들은 해 질 무렵에 가장 활발합니다.

Since you turn on the lights at sunset, bugs are drawn to the lights.”

당신들이 해 질 무렵에 불을 켜기 때문에 벌레들이 불빛에 끌립니다.’

This was an important finding in solving the problem.

이것은 문제를 해결하는 데 중요한 발견이었다.

The solution was very simple.

해결책은 아주 간단했다.

They turned on the lights only after it was completely dark.

그들은 완전히 어두워진 후에만 불을 켰다.

This stopped bugs from coming.

이 방법은 벌레들이 오는 것을 막았다.

With fewer bugs, there were also fewer spiders, birds, and droppings.

벌레가 줄어들면서 거미, 새, 배설물도 줄어들었다.

Since they didn’t have to use strong soap, the building was no longer damaged by their cleaning.

강한 세제를 사용할 필요가 없게 되어서, 건물이 청소로 인해 더 이상 손상되지 않았다.
