Have you heard of the Dead Sea?

사해에 대해 들어본 적 있는가?

It is a unique body of water in the Middle East.

이곳은 중동에 있는 독특한 수역이다.

Rocky cliffs hundreds of meters high surround it.

수백 미터 높이의 바위 절벽이 이곳을 둘러싸고 있다.

However, the water’s surface is around 400 meters below sea level.

This makes the Dead Sea the lowest point on Earth!

Surprisingly, it is not a sea.

놀랍게도, 사해는 바다가 아니다.

It is actually a salt lake that is almost ten times saltier than the ocean.

사실 이것은 바다보다 거의 10배 더 짠 소금 호수이다.

The Dead Sea is nearly 34 percent salt.

사해는 거의 34퍼센트의 소금이 있다.

This makes it one of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth.

There are several reasons why this lake is so salty.

이 호수가 이렇게 짠 데는 몇 가지 이유가 있다.

First, it receives very little rainfall every year.

In addition, not much fresh water flows into it.

Any fresh water it gets evaporates quickly because of the area’s hot climate.

These factors make sure that the Dead Sea stays salty.
