Potatoes are one of the world’s major sources of food.

감자는 세계 주요 식량원들 중 하나이다.

But in the 16th century, Europeans did not like them.

하지만 16세기에 유럽인들은 그것을 좋아하지 않았다.

Some Europeans called the potato the devil’s plant because it grows underground.

일부 유럽인들은 그것이 땅속에서 자라기 때문에 감자를 악마의 식물이라고 불렀다.

Other people were scared of the plant’s poisonous flowers.

다른 사람들은 그 식물의 독이 있는 꽃을 무서워했다.

In addition, people ate raw potatoes because they did not know how to cook them.

게다가 사람들은 그것들을 요리하는 방법을 몰라서 생감자를 먹었다.

This caused them to have serious stomachaches.

이것은 그들에게 심한 복통을 일으켰다.

Despite these problems, Friedrich II, King of Prussia, thought potatoes could be a big help to his hungry people.

이러한 문제점들에도 불구하고, 프로이센의 왕인 Friedrich(프리드리히) 2세는 감자가 굶주린 백성들에게 큰 도움이 될 수 있다고 생각했다.

So the king told his soldiers to plant potatoes in his garden.

Then he ordered the soldiers to watch over them.

This made people think the potatoes were precious.

So people started growing potatoes themselves and even sold them in markets.

Soon, potatoes became popular across Europe.

That’s how Friedrich II got his nickname, the Potato King.
