It is often said that Marvin Stone invented the drinking straw, but that’s not true.

Marvin Stone(마빈 스톤)이 빨대를 발명했다고 흔히 말해지지만 이는 사실이 아니다.

He only improved it.

그는 단지 그것을 개선했을 뿐이다.

According to historians, ancient Egyptians used straws to drink beer.

역사가들에 따르면, 고대 이집트인들은 맥주를 마시기 위해 빨대를 사용했다.

They did so to avoid drinking material floating in the beer.

그들은 맥주에 떠다니는 물질을 마시는 것을 피하기 위해 그렇게 했다.

Babylonian royalty also drank beer this way, although they used straws made of gold!

And according to a 6,000-year-old text, ancient Sumerians sometimes shared drinks by using straws made of reed.

Much later, in 1888, Marvin Stone invented the first paper straw.

He wrapped pieces of paper around a pencil and then glued them together.

He later improved his design by covering the paper in wax so it wouldn’t get wet.
