Every spring and fall, cities across America turn their lights off at night.

매년 봄과 가을, 미국 전역의 도시들은 밤에 불을 끈다.

Do they do it just to save energy?

No, they do not.

There’s another reason.

During these times, billions of birds migrate across the country.

They often fly at night and find their way by following the stars.

However, bright lights confuse them.

Lights Out campaigns are designed to help these birds.

People and companies are encouraged to turn off all unnecessary lights from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

If lights are used for security purposes, they can be covered to make them less bright.

Going dark this way not only protects birds but also saves energy.
