Plastic soda bottles have five bumps on the bottom.

탄산음료 페트병은 바닥에 다섯 개의 돌기가 있다.

However, you won’t find them on plastic bottles that contain water or juice.

하지만, 물이나 주스가 들어 있는 페트병에서는 그것들을 찾을 수 없을 것이다.

Why is this?

왜 이럴까?

It’s because soda has carbon dioxide in it.

왜냐하면 탄산음료에는 그 속에 이산화탄소가 들어 있기 때문이다.

This gas creates a lot of pressure inside the plastic bottle.

이 가스는 페트병 안에 많은 압력을 만들어 낸다.

The bottle must be able to resist this pressure.

그 병은 이 압력에 저항할 수 있어야 한다.

If the bottle has a greater area, there will be less pressure in it.

만약 병이 더 넓은 면적을 가지고 있다면, 병 속의 압력이 더 적어질 것이다.

That’s why the bumps are added.

그래서 돌기가 추가된 것이다.

They increase the area of the bottle and spread the pressure out.

그것들이 병의 면적을 늘리고 압력을 분산시킨다.

What would happen without the bumps?

돌기가 없으면 무슨 일이 일어날까?

The pressure would push the bottom outward.

압력이 바닥을 밖으로 밀어낼 것이다.

Then the bottle would lose balance and eventually fall over.

그러면 병은 균형을 잃을 것이다 그리고 결국 넘어질 것이다.
