In the movie The Martian, astronaut Mark Watney is left alone on Mars after a big storm.

영화 ‘마션’에서 우주 비행사 Mark Watney(마크 와트니)는 거대한 폭풍이 몰아친 이후 홀로 화성에 남게 된다.

To survive, he grows potatoes.

생존하기 위해, 그는 감자를 재배한다.

But would this be possible in real life?

하지만 이것이 실생활에서도 가능할까?

According to New Zealand scientist Michael Mautner, the answer is yes.

뉴질랜드 과학자인 Michael Mautner(마이클 모트너)에 따르면, 대답은 ‘그렇다’이다.

He says he has Martian vegetables, but he never went to Mars.

그는 자신이 화성의 채소를 가지고 있다고 말하지만 그는 결코 화성에 간 적이 없다.

So how could he have Martian vegetables?

그렇다면 그는 어떻게 화성 채소를 가질 수 있게 된 것일까?

He grew them in Martian soil here on Earth.

그는 이곳 지구에서 화성의 흙에 그것을 재배했다.

A few years ago, he found two rocks that fell to Earth from Mars thousands of years ago.

몇 년 전에 그는 수천 년 전 화성에서 지구로 떨어진 암석 두 개를 발견했다.

He took soil from the rocks.

그는 그 암석에서 흙을 채취했다.

Then he planted and gave water to tiny bits of asparagus and potato plants.

In a few weeks, the plants had grown several centimeters high.

“I was excited to see the vegetables grow so well,” he said.

“In the future, people living on Mars could grow their own food there.”
